Taca Looks Set To Join Oneworld

Fri May 19, 2000 6:38 am

TACA, which already has a relationship with American Airlines, is now set to join oneworld. The airline has announced that it is now looking into cooperationw with other members.

TACA joining oneworld will make the alliance very strong in South America, with the networks of Iberia, Lan Chile and American Airlines.

TACA has applied to the US Gov't for anti-trust immunity, pursuant to joining the oneworld alliance.

This puts the oneworld list of airlines like this;
American Airlines
British Airways
Aer Lingus
Cathay Pacific
Lan Chile
And future potential members

TACA appears to be a very good airline with a modern fleet, and should be an asset to the alliance.

Does anyone have any experiences with TACA?

I haven't been on TACA, but I live in Miami, so I know plenty of people who have. TACA is FAR from a well-run airline. It has a virtual monopoly over the 4 or 5 Central American countries it calls home and has really taken that for granted. The only thing consistant with TACA's flights are they're almost always late, and the planes, A320s included while relatively new are not cleaned well. Service on board draws nothing but jeers, and while not TACA's fault, the airports it draws on are old, decreped, and obsolete. In my opinion, TACA has a WAY to go before ever being considered for a major alliance. Yes, Crandal made arrangements with TACA, but that was only to further win concessions for AA down there while neutralizing a potential competitor. Remember that one of TACA's member airlines is Copa (of Panama) who is firmly alligned with CO, and has sold a significant equity stake to the houston airline. I'm sure Bethune and boys will have something to say.

Well talking about TACA I use to work for them.. i worked out of LAX.. and like i said I use to work for them. i think there the only airline to ever fly a 767-200 ( N767TA) from GUA to LAX with a rear crack landing gear and yes it flew with passangers when the flight goto LAX the aircraft was then taken out of service. also there Captain Haspon flys with one eye he has a glass eyes!!.. this was the same captain who flew the 767 that crashed on landing in GUA back almost 10 years ago. so if you ever fly to South America I would rather fly a U.S. Airline... service is much better!!!

Well, that's opened my eyes

It looks as if TACA may not be such an asset to the alliance - from the other side of the Atlantic they appear quite a good airline, just because of their fleet.

Maybe as the other oneworld members investigate TACA more closely they will baulk at the alliance!

BTW, the information was from this week's Flight International, forgot to include the source in my first post
