Regional Canadian Service From SEA

Hello, everyone! Here's a difficult one for you all.

Helijet Airlines flies Beech 1900D's from Boeing Field to Campbell River, BC. Outside of Helijet out of Boeing Field, Horizon Air and Air Canada Jazz, why haven't other Canadian regional airlines like Central Mountain Air or Pacific Coastal Airlines attempted US service (namely SEA)?

I would think there would be a market for Comox, Tofino, Castlegar (ski season), Abottsford and Penticton (ski season).

Just curious.

The only thing I can think of is, Central Mountain Air carries mainly business traffic. I'm not sure if there is enough trans-broder service required in this type of market (Why not just fly A/C/Horizon).. Not to mention the cost of doing business in another country can become quite expensive for smaller carries with a small amount of pax going back and forth (on a B1900). Also, for Central Mountain Air to land @ SEA would be quite expensive compared to the cities they generally serve (Exception YVR/YYC .. YEG is cheap :P ) Just my opinion of course, none of it really has validity or supporting documents Big grin

Don't forget about Kenmore Air. While they only fly Cessna Caravans from BFI and floatplanes, they do serve a lot of remote and resort destinations in Canada. You can charter a plane to any one of 50 different destinations in Washington and Canada. Sure you take off from a lake (lake Union or Lake Washington), but you still get to go and for relatively inexpensive fares.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

Yup, Kenmore is big on SEA area and parts of BC. You can also take a ferry from downtown Victoria to Port Angeles, and fly Kenmore to BFI for as low as $29 each way. The fare for the float plane from Victoria to Seattle is expensive however, considering the distance.

Horizon will start their seasonal Seattle-Kamloops route soon...can't forget that! And don't forget that Horizon also serves Victoria and Kelowna from SEA, as well as Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, to name a few.

Helijet dropped BFI service long ago, so long I can't remember when, last year I think.

Biggest problem with SEA service is gates. Due to lack of customs preclearance everywhere except YVR, they must use the S. terminal at SEA and there's only one gate (S16) that can handle non-jetway traffic. QX has exclusive use of that gate.

BFI is fine for o/d Seattle traffic, but there isn't enough of that since most pax need to connect at SEA. Seattle itself isn't a popular destination for leisure travel from Canada.

I thought Helijet still flew to BFI. The last time I was there, which was around mid-August, they still had signs in the terminal. But maybe that's all they were...just signs.

I think that's it. Because for as long as I can remember, even when I was just a kid, there have been signs for Iberia out on the curb. And as far as a I know, IB has never flown to SEA. I doubt SEA-MAD is a major city pair. However I think they were put up for pax who were on codeshare partners of IB, but under the IB name.

I should have said they stopped scheduled service last year. Until recently they provided fixed-wing charters and BFI was a relatively frequent destination. The Be1900D has just been sold and the King Air is I think dedicated to medivac so it's just eggbeaters now.

I believe QX can park 4 (?) planes at 'South Satellite' on the S16 side and even uses a gate on the other side of the Satellite for overflow. Also, only flights arriving from YYJ, YLW and YKA are REQUIRED to park at 'South Satellite' due to US Customs and Immigration processing. In addition to YVR, arriving flights from YEG and YYC can and a lot of times do park at the 'C' gates upon arrival as all three of these Canadian airports have US Customs/Immigration pre-clearance facilities.
