LH A380 - Names

Wed Nov 09, 2005 5:14 am

Hello,

triggered by JetMaster's thread on the LH A380 registrations I asked myself the question which names will the LH A380 jets get. A good number of the 744 fleet bears the names of the German regions (earlier this year the "Bayern" took me back from from IAD to FRA) which are the largest administrative entities in Germany and, apparently, therefore are given to the currently largest LH equipment. As a German expat I always appreciate flying on an LH plane which carries the name of a German city since there is always some connotation to it.

So, will the A380 get the names of the German states and the B744 need to be re-baptized? Any ideas?

I don´t think that LH will relabel their 744 fleet. I hope LH will baptize with names of German VIP´s or worldwide VIP´s as KLM do it. Or LH will baptize their A380 with the name of big German towns and German regions.

Helmut Kohl would be an great name for an A380. Wink

Christening Lufthansas planes with city / state names is a long tradition ... breaking with it would be the wrong way to go .. but what would you name the first A380?? Berlin, Bonn, Frankfurt, .... all the big / important cities are occupied by the B744 fleet ... and naming the largest passenger airliner "Bottrop" surely aint the way to go. So what about naming it after german landmarks like castles, rivers, areas ... Zugspitze, Altes Land, Taunus ...

Some cargo B747 used to have names and continents as their respective christened name ... maybe another option?

You know, if riveres aren't used already they might be a good idea. The first one can be named after the Rhine...

I know this. The B744's can then be continued to be named after cities such as Düsseldorf or Mülheim a.d Ruhr where as the A380's will be named after the Bundesländer, it gives them names for at least their first 16 A380's.

That's what a spotter said to me last week - nobody likes Bayern?

But it will be only 13 because Berlin, Bremen and Hamburg are cities and states.

Hmmm the name Rhine for an aircraft..I don't know. The KLM Boeing 747 that crashed in 1977 at Tenerife was called 'De Rijn': Dutch for The Rhine.

Mountains are already used by LX
( see: http://www.swiss.com/web/NS6/about-s...ress-releases-02.htm/?newsid=15396 ).
Even though they use the Swiss Mountains. So maybe it would be a nice idea to strengthen the relationship.

I guess they must do something new because all Bundesläner-Names and city names have been used.

They could name their planes after the A380-destinations. "Tokyo-Narita" or "Ciudad de Mexico"...
