Airports With The Worst/bumpiest Runways?

Wed Nov 09, 2005 10:10 am

Recently business has taken me to both Singapore & Hong Kong & I must admit that both these airports have very bumpy runways. Both times I flew in and out on an A330-300, not that this should have anything to do with it! I just found it interesting & wondered why?

I asked the Captain on the Singapore flight why & he said to me that it is probably something to do with the fact these runways are on reclaimed land and that it could have something to do with that? I understand we took off on RWY 2L at SIN, not sure which one (could be 25R????) at HKG?

Any ideas & your thoughts on the worlds worst runways? I think Darwin in Australia is probably our worst, very undulating, with makes it difficult if you land/flare in the wrong spot!

Cheers BZF  bouncy

Newark on one of the runways has some pretty big bumps right at the beginning of the roll. If you are not prepared for it you think something is wrong with the plane. I nearly aborted a take-off there once.

Philadelphia has some really bumpy taxiways too. I was told that it is because of the long periods on the summer where the taxiway is really hot and a plane sits on it for several minutes at a time.

actually the whole airport of HKG is on reclaimed land. Quite an interesting little island. The Maintenance facility CO uses (HAECO) has their hanger there.

anyway, back to the topic at hand...EWR, at least before the runway resurfacing...not sure about now as I hardly fly in or out of there anymore.

Runyway 22 in LGA feels like is filled with potholes. I'm sure there are many others.

Recently flew into HK in a CX A330 too. I don't think HK was any worse than other airports.

Back in the early 90's I went to Thailand on holidays - I thought Bangkok was bumpy, and I think even the captain had pre-warned everyone beforehand.
By the way, is there anyone on board who knows how to fly a plane?

Frankfurt am Main airport in Germany also had some bad runways a couple of years ago, however I believe FRA has been working to improve their runways for a while, also San Francisco has a very bumpy runway.

Considering the recent news about Lagos... wouldn't they have the worst runways? They actually cause damage to the planes because there are potholes

MUHA was the bumpiest I ever experienced. After several trips in and out of there, I have a whole new respect for Boeing 727 landing gear!

Speaking of landing gear and bumpy runways. I wonder MSP's MAC has fixed the dent in 30L from us landing a DC-10 and the Captain pulling reverse with us 10 feet AGL in the flair. Now that was something. I've never seen an airplane just stop flying and fall like that. A landing I shall never forget!

Now that I think about it Yap, Micronesia's runway had some pretty big holes in it. Weaving on landing or takeoff around the big ones was some fun I heard.
Maybe someone in the area has some better info. This was back in '95 when we were hauling fish into PGUM from the other islands.

Columbus, OH (KCMH) used to have some pretty bumpy runways, but they've done a nice job since about 2002 in the repaving efforts. Now they are smooth.

Bumpiest runway for me was when I was on a 747-200 taking off out of Khabarovsk (KHV), the airport was built in WWII & it felt like there were speed bumps on the runway.....

After about 12 post, there is still not consensus. 12 post with almost 12 different opinions so far!

I fly often in and out of CVG/DTW/ORD/LAX/NRT/SIN but I'm not sure I can single any of them out. There was a time years ago when I frequent LHR, CDG and AMS too. I guess I don't notice really bad bumps before, or because I haven't been traveling all that much. I will leave it to the ultra frequent flyers and pilots for this one.

Just a factoid: the highest normal stress on the wing occurs when the plane hits a pothole. The shear pin that holds on the engines was designed for this criteria.

I have lost a couple of teeth crossing the 28L/R - 1L/R intersection taking off from SFO. It seems particularly bad when taking off on 28L and hitting (literally) the 1R intersection.

If you want to feel some really rough runwys, try some of Russia's airports. In particular. St. Petersberg comes to mind. There is a reason for those big tires on Russian airliners!

Mexico City's Benito Juarez International Airport.

It doesn't help that at 7,000 feet AMSL, a takeoff roll in an AA 738 takes forever. The roll felt like we were trying to take off from a poorly maintained city street - every expansion joint slammed the plane back and forth.

according to this article BFI is pretty bad - you have to scroll down a bit to get to it - according to the reporter the runway was never fully repaired after an earthquake .

KDH is by far the worst runway on which I have landed. This is due to the fact that it was shelled quite a bit when Kandahar was a hot zone.

The reason for that is that most runways are constructed with a crown running down the middle of the runway. They're built that way to facilitate drainage. When you travel down one runway, then cross another one that has a crown on it, you'll get a bump. Happens at most airports with intersecting runways, probably more noticeable at SFO.

If you want to have some fun, get a 152 and do some touch and goes on Ann Arbor, Michigan's runway 12. It's grass, and as you can see here, it crosses over the paved taxiway and runway:

The result? Well, the level of the paved runway is higher than that of the grass runway. As you're accelerating with the nosewheel up....but just before you're ready to lift off...you hit the paved taxiway and are catapulted into the air:

...And a good time is had by all.  biggrin

Gatwick is pretty bad - I remember taking off in a 757-200 with only 14 passengers on board fying to Geneva so the plane was really light and it was bouncing and rattling and shaking all over the place. When we arrived at Geneva it was a little smoother. My most recent flight from Gatwick was on a Northwest DC10 and I rember thinking then how bumpy the runway was, especially when we arrived at Minneapolis and it was so much smoother.

I flew into/out of the old Athens airport way back in 1987 and I swear the runway had potholes in it.

At one point I thought we were disappearing down a ravine!!

If its worth anything, many airliners in India have double bogeys on the A320 for runways because of the poor conditions of runways there.

Only the "original" A-320s for Indian Airlines bought over a decade ago had and have double bogeys. The newer ones with Air Deccan and Kingfisher, as well as the leased ones with IC, all have single bogeys.

As for poor runways, well, when were you last updated on runway conditions in India please?

The Bristol (BRS) runway has always been infamous for it's "dip". I THINK it's because it was built over two neighboring hilltops (which are GREAT for attracting fog too!  sarcastic  )

SAN has a pretty bumpy runway. Or maybe it just feels like it b/c most of the time we just slam into the runway on landing w/full reverse thrust...

I don't know about runway, but taxiway...
The roughest I've been on is in PHX. I don't know the runway number or anything, but the taxiway is immediately parallel to the northernmost runway, I think it runs down all the GA spots. That's a pretty harsh taxiway.

I second the vote for Santo Domingo (SDQ) as the bumpiest high-use runway. My first landing there was on a fully loaded 767-400 and we started hitting potholes almost immediately after landing. This flight had a lot of Dominican passports on it and those people (about half the plane) started clapping and cheering when the plane finished roll-out ...the rest of us looked at each other wondering if perhaps they had experienced landings at SDQ with outcomes that weren't so good...

An addendum to the post on Athens - the new ATH airport has very smooth runways. Albeit it was a little trippy wake up on landing and find an IKEA next to the runway. So much for cultural escape  Wink
