Wed Nov 09, 2005 11:51 pm

Read on pprune that VS will no longer op LGW-PHC after 11th January 2006, any truth in this?

Yes. Virgin Nigeria will be taking up the LOS service from LGW at the end of November and as they also fly to PHC from LOS, the decision was taken to axe the direct service and send passengers via LOS with VK.

Thanks for the info, seems logical to me!  Smile

Is LOS-LGW going to be daily?

Any idea where VS will use this 343 to now?

Well they are loosing G-VBUS to VK, so the LGW-PHC a/c will just remain at LHR and operate regular A343 flights from there rather than positioning down to LGW a couple of times a week.

This info came from VS today :

**********************************************************

CANCELLATION OF PORT HARCOURT SERVICE

Due to the introduction of Virgin Nigeria and its direct services to London and
Port Harcourt from its Lagos hub, Virgin Atlantic has decided to cancel its services to Port Harcourt.

This change will enable Virgin Atlantic to increase its services out of Heathrow this winter by operating additional Cape Town services, as well as a new daily US service from Summer 2006. More details to come shortly.

Our last services to Port Harcourt will be the VS623 on 11 January 2006 ex UK and the VS624 on 12 January ex Port Harcourt.

Passengers booked onto Virgin Atlantic flights between Gatwick and Port Harcourt after 12 January 2006 will be reprotected onto Virgin Nigeria flights from Gatwick to Port Harcourt via Lagos.

`new daily US service from Summer 2006` ???? hmmmmmmm ????
Now there`s a great way to start the rumour mill in motion !!!  Wink

Cheers

I have no information as of yet on VK increasing its Gatwick services to daily. However, considering this latest move by VS to axe Port Harcourt and VK's flights to London rumoured to be fully booked until April, I would expect VK to increase its weekly frequencies to London Gatwick to 7. This may probably happen with the Spring 2006 timetable.

Does this mean VK will be leaving LHR and moving all operations in LGW? Or will they serve both airports?

VK has transfered its operations to Gatwick because its Heathrow slots were not recieved well with its passengers, as arrival in Lagos is around 3:30AM!

Gatwick slots are far better in terms of timing, but who knows, it may have also been a result a VS/VK coordination effort.

The new Summer 2006 service to the as yet unidentified US destination will probably use the slot pair that VS has just leased from UA for five years. Sounds like it could be a new destination, either a return to ORD or possibly PHL. Guess we'll find out soon enough.

Separately, looks like the PHC service didn't generate enough traffic to justify an increase from the twice weekly service, so logical to offer a connecting service via LOS that will allow better frequency dispite the aircraft change.

May be BA can take the opportunity and start serving PHC instead of VS...

I doubt it is a new destination. Probably a second daily to Boston or Miami.

Leezyjet,

Did you notice the discrepency on VK's timetable page?

Lagos - Johannesburg
VK303 2320 0605 1--4-6- A340 from 24NOV

Lagos-London LGW
Lagos - London Gatwick
VK293 2335 0530 1---5-7 A340 from 24NOV

Above means 2 A340s are in operation (look at Monday takeoff times)

Anybody can shed some light on above? Is VK boosting its A340 fleet as early as November or is this an error?

PHL doesn't have enough traffic for two same-country carriers to LHR per Bermuda II.

Yeah there was another one too, where the a/c departs from LGW on a Thursday but doesn't show as flying into LGW to operate it.

Hopefully, they will fly the route to ORD! I really think that there is a lot of potential, especailly if they can secure some business contracts and time the flight nicely. Also, I think it would probably be smart to start the route with the Upper Class Suite to increase press, because their other seat has been outshadowed by the new one, even if it's lie flat. Also, no matter if UA and AA are on the route, VS is a nicer airline and customers will notice that. Now, I think it would be smart if they did some sort of codeshare with UA to help market share and also since UA just leased them these unused slots, they already have a good relationship.

If it isn't a multi-frequency route (e.g. IAD, BOS), my bet is it will be Chicago. VS has publicly stated they want to restard ORD and YYZ.

I'll join you on that bet!

But I would think that ORD would have preference over increased frequency to an existing route.

We shall see!!

I am thinking theyre going to lose out to lufthansa and air france, from stories i've heard people traveling to nigeria, i doubt they would want to connect in nigeria and endure the nigerian airport experiance twice. i could be wrong though, but i think virgin is giving up any money to be made on London-PHC to LH and AF.

it won't be any of those. i know what it is but i have been sworn to secrecy. i will say this much- it is not a new destination. it will be an additional frequency to one of their popular destinations.
