I'm convinced that HP from PHX to MKE has the largest amount of wheelchairs. I used to non-rev that leg and always got bumped by what seemed to be an AARP delegation.

BOS-RSW and RSW-BOS...TONS of golf bags and it seems like just about everyone feels the need to have HUGE suitcases that weigh 100+lbs.....but we still love our customers and all their baggage... Big grin

As we like to say, lots of bags means lots of customers on-board and that's a good thing even if it kills us rampers!

New York - Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, South America.

Miami - Port Au Prince.

I think I remember hearing that Continental opens check-in at EWR for Puerto Rico and Santo Domingo flights 90 minutes beforehand, because of the vast quantities of cargo being shipped.

New York City, Boston, Miami, Orlando, and Fort Lauderdale to anywhere in Hispanola or Puerto Rico are extremely bag intensive routes. One reason jetBlue ended JFK-SDQ was because they couldn't handle the large amount of baggage.

Doesn't CO have checkin open all the time or is there a "special" check in for those flights. Usually the check-in is open 2-3 hours before.

I'll add my 2 cents.

Having flown in and out of YUL about 10 times this year so far and leaving around the same time each time I have noticed pax travelling to Africa (AT, MS) seem to all have luggage carts piled up with at least 4-6 huge bags per family.

SQ in LAX needed 2-3 carousels for their 747 arrival from NRT. My flight (LY from YYZ/TLV) was also on the same belt and staff had to remove all the baggage since people couldn't claim it fast enough. Bags were falling off the belt in every direction. Funny thing is, there were 5 open belts and they decided to stick everything on these 3.

On several occasions, I witnessed single passengers checking in at DEN for ASE with more than 20 pieces of luggage. I recall the greatest was 26 pieces (yes, I stood nearby and counted).

Any flight to Africa on Ethiopian Airlines - not uncommon to see pax with 8 pieces of large suitcases checking them in... I recall seeing this one old man at IAD checking in, came from parking lot with a skycap pushing huuuuge cart, about 8 or 9 similar large suitcases. At $150 excess for each above 2 pieces, well...

I would say any routes to and from major cruise ports. Boston-Miami, to name one. AA used A300s to serve the dual needs for large people and baggage capacity. That's what I hear about the A300s: they had a lot of belly space to fit those steamer trunks  Wink.

Now, either the cruise industry has gone to hell or AA is a few sandwiches shy of a picnic. A300s have given way to majestic MD-80s. They must be snapping, or else I have the dynamics wrong. They're the ones running the airline, so I'll defer to their wisdom (sarcasm intended).

SV flights from US seem to have lots of bags, due to the Saudi have no problem paying extra for all its washing machines, Tvs, refrigerators as excess baggage.

TACA does have a huge load on some routes from US as well.

I always found it a bit unusual that BWIA pax would checkin really heavy bags inbound to Trinidad and Tobago from JFK etc.

Winter is Ski bag season, Summer is Golf Bag season.

We should start a more interesting thread on Which flights have the most improperly packed bags?

Joining the chorus, I think it would easily be flights from JFK and MIA to Caribbean points, particularly in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Haiti. People there literally fly to the United States just to shop for things that would cost many times more in their home countries, and then they fly home with all of it stuffed into bags. It is not uncommon for a family of six or seven to check in at JFK with several bags (per person!) to check

Flights to africa are very heavy. My uncle is from Ghana and when they visit, they expect some of their bags to arrive a few days over. I can also speak for London/Nigeria. The passengers would bring a whole car if they can.

And of course US/Caribbean not only SDQ/SJU try nearly all caribbean destinations. The shortshipped bags on JM and BW to the eastern caribbean becuause of bulkouts are endless during peak seasons. Many a times JM had to ship the bags on Amerijet / DHL cause after a week of bulkouts there is just no other way to get the bags down.

When I worked the JM counter on flights GND/JFK, you would see two people stuggling to lift one bag. They put on the scale and it runs up 100/120lbs, then stare at me and say it is a little heavy. It was quite an experience to work that counter. And of course those who are not overweight are sure to pack exaclty 70lbs in each checked piece and try to fit 50lbs in a bag that obvioiusly cant go in the overhead compartment or under the seat onboard, so to work the gate was another task. These peak season flights are always bulked out.

Any flight to SA as well. For some reason the passengers out of EWR seem to be the worst offenders. I wouldn't even know where to buy a suitcase the size of some of those you see commonly. I think it's these flights that created the suitcase wrap rip-off concessions.

Any flights on IceAir to KEF is always guaranteed to have a ton of bags and some very interesting cargo as well. About 5 years ago i worked the winter at EGE and Mariah Carey flew in from JFK with 3 or 4 people. Their bags took up all of hold 4 of a B757, I couldn't believe it......what's crazier was that she was only staying for 4 days.

Some flights from the USA to Carribbean island countries, Mexico, certain South and Central American Countries have year round limits on the quanity of excess baggage one can check in. Some of those same airlines and routes severly limit or don't allow any excess baggage at key heavy travel times like around Easter and Christmas.
With many of those flights noted above, they go to places where basic goods are either unavilable, highly taxed (like booze) or expensive (clothing, appliances or almost all imported goods). Often you have a family member working in the USA (legally or illegally) or traveling to see family in the destination countries. They usually bring back stuff for family, friends they bought with their income. In some cases, some are bring items for resale in the destination countries for themselves or for others to make money from.

But trust me on this one, once you've been on a KLM 744 to Paramaribo you'll go "what the heck?!".

The PK flights from MAN carry a ridiculous amount of luggage to ISB, LHE, KHI, etc. Its not uncommon to be told that all the luggage will not make the flight as there simple is not enough space to carry it all!

Any flight from the UK to Pakistan, you walk through the check in hall at for instance BHX before a PK flight leaves and everybody has huge boxes tied together with string. Quite amusing really!

I've also heard that the Surinam Airways 747 AMS-PBM uses most of the runway when it takes off from AMS. I imagine it's packed full of TVs!

Cheers,
Noel.

I recently checked in at BKK for my flight to Zurich/Vienna. I am always very lucky because I have the ability to repeatedly queue in the slowest lane.
I appeared very early, and when the counters opened, many passengers rushed to them. An African overtook me, which did not bother me at all until I saw the luggage on his "second" cart being pulled to the counter.
He was supposed to travel alone, but carried five bags totaling ~200kg.
It took minutes until I was taken to the Business Class counter by a very nice person of SWISS. This was a nice surprise.

By the way: I had checked two bags having 19kg together. My carry on bag was light too. I am probably the perfect passenger!  Smile

When I worked at AUA I had a lot of experience with this. I must say that routes with the passengers that take the most luggage are:

-India
-Turkey
-Middle East

Any flight out of MIA to Latin America, specially

MIA GYE
MIA CLO
MIA VVI
MIA MGA

No overheadbins available after the first 100 pax have boarded.
MIA handles twice the amount of luggage as DFW , with less flights .

When I was working at Heathrow, any flight into India was horrendous for extra baggage. People started to get crafty though and carried huge amounts of luggage through security and got it gate checked at which point it was too late for them to get charged the extra amount for excess luggage.

Mind you, that was 5 years ago now. Not sure if it's still going on at all.

BA's LGW - KIN is the worst, I checked in a pax the other day who had 5 bags all at 32kg (70lbs I think). We have a whole zone dedicated to the KIN check in and also scales for the pax to weigh their bags.

The heaviest bag that a pax has ever put on my scales was 74kgs!! (not quite sure what that is in pounds).

The KIN flight is my favorite to check in as the whole time your on the desk you only check in a few people as they take a long time rearranging their luggage.  biggrin

Ooooh...my 2 cents here...

I have to agree with the JFK/LGA-FLL route...and believe it or not....JFK-SFO...apparently there are no retail stores in the san francisco bay area. the cost of living is high in either city so I'm not seeing the reasoning for buying so much CRAP and lugging it across country....except maybe to annoy other passengers and the flight crew  Smile

Nearly all routes between North America and Latin America & the Caribbean are very, very heavy with checked luggage.

I know the ski and golf destinations fill up the holds quickly as well, but i think that's more a space issue than a weight issue.
