BAA To Rebuild Terminal 2 At LHR

Fri Nov 11, 2005 8:51 am

British airport operator BAA said it planned to spend up to GBP£1.5 billion (USD$2.61 billion) on a new passenger terminal at London's Heathrow Airport in time for the 2012 Olympics.

BAA said on Thursday it hoped to demolish an existing 50 year old terminal and office buildings and develop a modern facility capable of handling up to 30 million passengers.

The plan still needs approval from airlines and regulatory support from the Civil Aviation Authority, BAA said.

"Very early indications are that an incremental net cost of GBP£1 billion to GBP£1.5 billion (USD$1.74 billion - USD$2.61 billion) would be required to deliver the development," BAA said in a statement.

A spokesman said the cost would come on top of GBP£5.2 billion (USD$9.05 billion) earmarked to be spent on Heathrow, one of the world's busiest airports, over the next 10 years.

BAA is currently building a new GBP£4.2 billion (USD$7.31 billion) giant fifth terminal at Heathrow, currently Europe's biggest construction project, which is due for completion in 2008.

It also plans to close or redevelop Terminal 1 and renovate Terminals 3 and 4.

It would be nice to think that there could be a spectator area.

Well I can always dream.

What will happen to the flights operated out of T2 today when it will be closed down? Will they move them all to T5 (which will be finished before that time comes) in the meantime or distribute them between T1, T3, T4 & T5?

Thank god - T2 is the worst terminal this side of Kabul.

I have missed 3 flights this year due to the congestion and inability to negotiate the crowds despite using Business Class check-in counters with various airlines. On my last trip - we even arrived at 4am just to wait for the terminal building to open just to make sure we didn't have to get into the same mess!

Interesting. The last thing I heard was that The Queen's Building was a listed property?

I thought they would extend the A380 pier to terminal 1?

I'll second that (even though I've never been to Kabul and have no comparison there!)

With BA moving out of T1 and T4 in 2008 when T5 opens, they'll be more than enough spare capacity in those two terminals for the T2 traffic to be moved to enable its demolition.
Let's Go British Caledonian!

How big is T5 going to be if BA are moving (all?) their operations there? And is T5 then going to be a sole BA terminal?

IMO perhaps a "One World Terminal", "Star Alliance Terminal" and "Sky Team" (but there is no UK member of the Sky Team?) would make sense to ease connecting, that way if I wanted to fly to North America I could have the ease of transfer if I fly with the same alliance.
Then the other terminal could be for Virgin and the others...?
