Saudi Airlines To Receive 15 Embraer..

Sat Nov 12, 2005 5:56 am

Saudi Arabian Airlines will next month receive the first of the 15 new Embraer aircraft it ordered last April, according to Director General Dr Khaled Ben-Bakr. The national carrier will use the aircraft to add frequencies on existing regional and domestic flights, and eventually develop mini-hubs in the northern city of Hail and the southern resort city of Abha.

Is it the first time that SV operates regional jets ? As far as i remember the smallest A/C they had was their MD's ( correct me if i am wrong ) .
Most of the Gulf carriers don't operate regional jets , they rather operate widebodies between cities of the Arabian Gulf .
Hijazey , what do u think about this move ? Do these small airplanes suit the domestic Saudi market ? Would they now try to operate more frequent flights with small planes rather than less flights on larger planes ?

Once they operated 2 F28s on lease from Cimber Air and some Fairchild F27s coming from Hughes Airwest.Even they had one Embraer Bandeirante and one DHC-6.
Anyway this time , it's the first one they go regional jets on a quite big scale.
Hope it helps.

I think the Embrarer jets are a good aircraft choice for Saudi Arabian. They will be very useful for expanding routes and frequencies in the Middle Eastern region where the larger capacity aircraft are too big.

Larnaca for example would be perfect for the Embrarer and allow increased frequencies but without an overall capacity increase.

Wow, those ERJs will look very stunning in the Saudi Arabian Airlines livery. Maybe the regional jets will finally break through in the Middle Eastern market, a market which has been known for widebody aircraft. Who knows we will see more Middle Eastern airlines order the regional jet once they prove to be a success at Saudi Arabian Airlines. Of all Middle Eastern airlines, I like the liveries of SV, RJ, GF and Etihad the most.

Royal Jordanian is also going to be ordering a bunch of them around the end of this year.

Hopefully they'll be frequent visitors to Dammam. I think SV could really create a HUB at DMM with the Embraer serving Gulf destinations like Kuwait, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Muscat etc.

I'm really looking forward to those E-jets, and I think most passengers will like flying in them. The 2-2 seating with generous shoulder room and pitch (it is roomier inside than the MD90) is well suited to the local market.

It's low operating cost makes it perfect for thin domestic routes. I don't expect it to be used that much for international service; There isn't enough premium seating. But it might be used on routes like MED-CAI or RUH-SAH . And it will free up the MD90 for more regional international flights.

That's a surprise to me, since they've recently ordered some Q400s

At that time of the year, you'll get either a 747 or 777, at off-peak you get a combination of MD90 and 777

I'm almost certain they'll use the 170 on the JED-ALY route (and RUH-ALY summer service). At the moment the MD-90 faces severe weight restrictions when serving the Mediterranean city due to Al-Nozha's short runway and the trees (those who've been to ALY know what the latter means).
