Big Part Of A350-wing To Be Built In Germany

Sat Nov 12, 2005 8:13 pm

According to SPIEGEL, the upper wing panel - a 32 meters long and up to 8 meters wide part (and therefore the biggest part of the wing) - will be built in Stade, Germany. An Airbus executive is quoted that the reason for this decision is the big experience they have with composite materials (as most parts of the wings will be of composites).

So the A350 will be the first Airbus with wings not entirely made in Britain.

actually BAe has been subcontracting wing work to Chinese companies for several years already, there may well be many other foreign suppliers already

Okay, but to my knowledge parts of that size were always built by BAE. Will be interesting to see if the final assembly of the wings still will be in Britain. Maybe they ship the parts to Toulouse and assemble the wings before they put it on the plane?

Wrong - the A400M upper panels will also be made in Stade, as the have got the composites experience from making the VTP.
Also soon 4 A320 wingsets a month will be made in China.
And in the same method, all flaps for Airbus aircraft are made in Bremen.

The final assembly of the wings will be in Broughton (or Filton for the A400M) but the components come from all around the world - some more examples are A320 wing panels from Korea and the US, stringers from the US and I think SAAB makes the J-nose for the A380 (or was it the D-nose?)

Big parts (if not most) of the 787 is build in Japan. Airbus and Boeing have design and engineering centers spread all over the world. Significant parts of the 777 is build by Airbus and huge parts (40% or so?) of Airbus aircrafts are US made.

Those - and there are a few of them here - who sleeps with starts and strips patterned under wear (or ditto EU flag) simply proves that they are plain fools as this industry is truly global. The size of the market rather than the division of it between Airbus and Boeing is what really matters in both EU and US economy (and Chinese and Russian and Japanese etc etc).

What to me makes this industry so interesting to follow is not narrow minded nationalistic pride (wives that never let the sorry ones take off their nationalistic patterned underwear) but the fact that we are dealing with a globalization industry that - through the way it is developing - is playing a significant part in forming globalization itself!

What is at stake between the Airbus 380 and Boeing's 787 is whether globalization is going to be for the elite (Boeing - the few who will like point to point (in the wider order of things the 777-200LR v 340-500 is deeply insignificant in my view)) or for the broad world population (Airbus - get so many from A to B as possible in one go). Who ever proves right in this battle will determine what kind of world we ourselves and our children will live in. And that - rather than uninformed nationalistic nonsense - is what matters here!

What? That would be news to me? All I know is that EADS-CASA makes parts for the 777, but I wouldn't call it significant.
But you're right about the globalisation, HdH in Sydney are owned by Boeing and manufacture the wingtip fences for the A380 and A340.

But IMO it won't be the case of hub to hub OR point to point, but AND. There will be some people who don't want to wait for the (hypothetically speaking now) twice weekly flight between two cities and take the daily flight to a hub and then to another hub and then on. But there will be people who can wait and decide on which day to fly, and it will be those who fly the point to point.

Where does the A350 fit into all this, if its basically A380 v. B787?

And what exactly is your point concerning the topic of this thread? Did I (or anybody else) "wear nationalistic patterned underwear"??? Is it nationalistic to quote an article that states that parts of the A350 wing production will be done in Germany? Sorry, as much as I agree with your post about globalization, but I don't understand what it's got to do with this thread.

Sure - I have just read a few of the dreaded Boeing fanatics (one
claiming that he has ordered his travel agent never to book him on an Airbus aircraft) and found that this topic proves how plain silly this kind of view is!

Otherwise point taken!

I think the reason why Airbus is looking at sourcing the A350 wing from Germany is the fact BAE Systems is already going full-tilt making wings for the A320 Family planes and the A380, so BAE may not have enough production capacity to handle A350 wing production.

Please note, it's not BAE SYSTEMS, it's Airbus UK. "Guns and ammo" don't make the wings, Airbus UK does.....  yell  Yes, BAE own 20% of Airbus, but since the integration of Airbus as one company it's not just the 20% of the UK section, but 20% of the whole company.
The wings will be built in Broughton, Fraport just said (rightly so) that the upper covers will be built in Stade.

So have there been Airbuses without wings made in Britain  Wink ?
