It reads "Proud of Being Brazilian." The changes were made a few months ago.

They already have! JJ now has a 40%+ domestic cabotage market share!

As has been discussed in a.net before, JJ is also expanding its international network, inaugurating a JFK-GRU-GIG flight [which will go daily in 2006] and planning new destinations such as London.

With the sale of VarigLog and VEM to TP for USD 63 million, RG has substantially improved its liquidity position and paid off certain lease creditors last week. However, it is still not out of the woods by any stretch of the imagination. The key for RG is to have its creditors assume control under bankruptcy and remove FRB as the controlling shareholder. FRB has been a DISASTROUS shareholder for RG.

They have no conditions for that. Even as the main important in domestic market, TAM keeps only 10 widebodies (3 are in fact under wet-lease agreement). Varig keep 23 widebodies plus 4 757. If TAM use their new A350 and keep with the A332 fleet, they will have all the conditions to be the number one.
Nowadays TAM all the times says that " they want to grow with good profits , not be number 1 " but its obvious that they keep the objective to be the number one!

That's awesome. I love catchphrases like that. Dutchbird used to have "Made in Holland". I loved that too. I hate it when they put the ISP on the hull, looks so cheap IMHO.

methinks it's marketing-- none of the above. TAM lacked a bit of nationalism*, so they added not only that phrase but also the colors.

The corruption scandal was not yet around in February. And our economy has been doing great, for quite some time.

I've just came back from a trip to Brazil in October and I chose TAM for my domestic flights.
I could notice that at a certain time in every flight, TAM FA's, , used to mention the "Orgulho de ser Brasileira" sentence, in portuguese, but then, when they addressed the passengers in english saying the same as they did in portuguese, they would not translate that sentence for "Proud of Being Brazilian"
So it seemed to be a sentence only for Brazilians, or at least, portuguese speakers
That, and also the fact that they also spoke in french on board, really caught my attention

My experience with TAM domestic last September was that the slogan "Orgulho de ser brasileiro" was also sometimes mentioned in English, if I recall correctly "...TAM, a company proud of being Brazilian"

As mentioned by Lipe, TAM slogan came to increase the identity of TAM with Brazil. They realise that with greater identification with Brazil they could appeal more for both domestic pax and internatinal pax, taking into account that Brazil became very "fashionable" in the international market. [the corruption scandal started only after Feb, while the Brazilian economy is doing very well, and is the main factor that could Lead Lula for a re-election in 2006!].

I fly a lot with Tam both domestic and international. They say in portuguese " Obrigado por voar TAM, uma companhia que tem orgulho de ser brasileira " but when they say in english they only say " Thanks for fly TAM, a company proud to be at your service ". They try not to say that they are proud to be brazilian (probably because they are afraid of their international customers that avoid using their "brazilian" service).

Note: In English, the sentence mentioned is " Thanks for fly TAM, a company proud to be brazilian ". as Hardi said above.

I didn't say you were lying, neither tried to "hide" problems of Brazil. But I mean that your comments were exaggerated. You overstated this situation.

TAM's livery may have been a result of the government campaign and RG adopting it, but it is not directly linked to it. Varig's Brasil logo, on the other hand, is. That logo on RG's aircraft is trademarked by the governmnet and used by many others as well.

TAM has plenty capacity to replace VARIG.

TAM has 10 A332, it´s ok. But a click on fingers to Airbus and more will come. TAM has something important which is credit.

What TAM will not do, it bringing more A332 or others, put them to fly to certain destinations and compete with RG and the intls. carriers; and of course loose money in markets where a 3rd operator won´t fit. The expansion of TAM on international routes is a certain issue but it will happen only on routes where TAM could make money.

Sorry to disagree but we know that even for the A332 there is a delay of several months (10 i think nowadays) to get a new plane. All of us know there are no widebodies in the market, and a 10 months delay in replace a company in a route could drive changes on customers mind. The only way Tam can replace Varig is taken some RG widebodies, something i can't imagine.

But i believe TAM is the best nowadays, mainly in the international flights.

This was evaluated in the past, in case RG colapsed. TAM would manage RG´s actaul fleet and technical crew while new Airbuses would come.

To be very honest, I dont think TAM fits on the strategy of "growth + profits", I would rather define TAM as "profit-only" maybe some slow growth but only as a reaction not proaction.

"Growth and profit" is a strategy adopted by GOL, which has an amazing pace of growth and profits - although some a.net members in the past stated that with GOL's growth it would increasingly post LESS profits. We can see that this is NOT the case, the more GOL grows the more money it makes. In my opinion, TAM is only growing more nowadays as a reaction of increased competition, mainly by GOL, the decreasing level of service by RG in international routes, and higher market demand. In fact, TAM's rate of growth I assume is lower than the Brazilian aviation market rate of growth, at about 17 to 20% annually.

Agree. Amazing enough I still find RG better in domestic routes...TAM onboard service is average to poor and very uninspired - apart from TAM's crew who are excelent -, not to mention that it does not offer premium class on long domestic routes.

TAM international biz class also needs to be redesigned an improved, although fitted with lie-flat seats, TAM seats cannot compare to the recent releases of major Asian and European airlines.
