Delta To Start Atlanta-McAllen Service

Sun Nov 13, 2005 2:27 am

Delta Airlines will inagurate twice daily non-stop service between Atlanta and McAllen, Texas on 10 February 2006:

DL 4384 ATL 1045-1242 MFE CRJ Daily
DL 4401 ATL 1945-2142 MFE CRJ Daily

DL 4414 MFE 0630-1000 ATL CRJ Daily
DL 4384 MFE 1315-1645 ATL CRJ Daily

The flights will be operated by ASA. IIRC, Delta Connection flew to McAllen from Dallas until near the (or until the end?) of their Dallas hub.

No we didn't fly there. That might be Continental Connection (Skywest or Colgan) outta Houston maybe?

sounds very good, the times seems to be good for conections, also to europe.

Threre is a good demand from europe (gemany) to McAllen. Very good for Delta, to offer a McAllen route from there world-hub ATL.

Did ASA ever serve HRL or BRO from DFW?

From what I can tell no. The closest destination was CRP.
Will be interesting to see whether these flights will be accepted. Of course ATL offers the superior connections to the Eastern US and Europe, but IAH/DFW are better positioned for the West. Not to mention that it is another loooong RJ flight.

Interesting....I know NW tried MEM-MFE a couple years ago but it did not last long. Maybe ATL will work better because of the mass number of connections through there.

On another note, what other cities could we see being connected to ATL in the furture?

Just a thought, but could DL consider maybe a ATL-GRK route and take a piece of the military pie. Killeen, TX has grown many times over these last few years and with Ft. Hood being there, I'd think DL would want in on the action instead of Eagle and Continental having all the fun. The city of Killeen recently moved their airline service to another airport because the current one was getting to small. New terminal built on an existing military airport capable of handling 747's and C-5A's.

I am surprised that we have not heard from MFEFlyer yet.

It is good news for McAllen. I hope they can keep it.

Delta is missing quite a bit of the "winter texan" population by starting so late. Northwest started flying to McAllen in March and dumped it in Jan.

I agree with CIDFlyer, the connection possibilities are endless.

Northwest should have had 1 MEM and 1 MSP flight instead of 2 MEM flights.

P.S. Anyone want to talk about the McAllen Airport Master Plan?

I almost died laughing when I saw this thread--Delta must have been lurking on this forum listening to MFEFlyer. Way to go MFE and MFEFlyer

Great news for an underserved area. Allegiant scares the majors.

Are there any cities in the east I would connect to in CVG I couldn't connect to through ATL? If there is it's only these small places that very few people fly to from CID. ATL obviously offers more connections and frequencies. ATL also has more O&D from CID than CVG.

Yep--they also send the 757 down there from up here at IAH.

And at the same time, the cities that ATL offers that CVG doesn't are obscure and small places that very few people fly to from CID. Geographically, CID-CVG makes much more connecting sense. It not only offers good connections to Florida, but also the Northeast. Atlanta can't offer the latter.

The flight isn't THAT bad... I've done CRP-ATL several times and it's not overly long. The CRJ isn't the most comfortable aircraft but it's not so long that I'm going bezerk wanting out.

I read in the press release that DL in ATL now has 220 non stop destinations, that really is quite amazing when you think about it!

Finally, a new airline in MFE... AA and CO have been doing good business in MFE (as said before, CO even sends the B757).

There are many Mexicans who use MFE, HRL and BRO, but MFE is the preferred option thanks to AA and CO mainline. Now, lets see how DL does with RJ to ATL. Hope they get good yields to justify an equipment upgrade (MD80 perhaps).

It makes me remember the good old days of TWA's MFE-AUS-STL flight with MD80's

Don't hold your breathe for an upgrade to mainline. If the flight does well, a third daily CRJ is very likely, but there is no way Delta is going to send an MD80 to MFE. That capacity is not needed, and probably couldn't fill.

If I remember correctly, many years ago Braniff ran a Brownsville-DAL-IAD service using a 707. Of course, that was back when they also served a full hot meal with beverages on one-hour Convair 340 puddle jumpers. Interesting how the bulk of airline service in the Valley has now shifted to MFE and HRL. Also interesting that Southwest has never run nonstops between DAL and HRL, as far as I know.

It is impressive, indeed, and that number will likely only continue to grow, as more international destinations are added, plus an assorted domestic few. Not to mention that the number of cities being dropped from ATL is very limited, Hickory being one of the very few.

Not very likely. It would be more likely to first see a third flight added, and then see the CRJs upgraded to CR7s. Mainline would be years off, if ever.
