Is AA Ever Going To Change Their Paint Scheme?

Mon Nov 14, 2005 11:04 am

All US airlines have changed their schemes atleast twice over the past 30 or so years. American still has the same image it had back in the 70's. Are there any plans for them to change their look?

This has been discussed many times on these forums, most of them concluding with no.

That's because their image is timeless, and has held up amazingly through all the changes the industry, and competitors' liveries, have undergone.

No, thank God.

The AA livery is one of the most recognized c/s in the world. Branding 101, if it aint broke don't fix it.

There are some airlines who I wish would revert back to their older c/s, top on my list would be DL Bring back the widget! As for AA - yes, it has proven to be extremely durable in terms staying power.

AA's livery is not only simple and well-recognized, it is also lighter-weight, and looks absolutely smashing.

Other than minor tweaks and the occasional retro-jet, I think they'd best leave what works, alone.

yeah, because certain people just insist it will never happen. but of course, they ignore the "polished composite" problem that will present itself in the near future.

No, for the zillionth time on here. It's a classic, clean, recongnizable livery. Why change something that works, simply because an armchair on here is bored with it.

God, this is getting annoying. In every single thread, people throw it down that AA will not change their livery because it is timeless, and beautiful. You can't argue this point, its an opinion!

Like said, no matter what happens, they WILL NEED to change their livery should they ever obtain a 787, which they've said they will. There is no way they'll be able to keep their livery.

I honestly think it's a nice livery, and it's great to look at, but the inevitable is going to happen. AA WILL CHANGE THEIR LIVERY!

How come there's no discussion on a new AZ livery, its just as old.

Both schemes are classics and well recognized where ever they fly.

Opinion backed up by 30 years of fact, my friend.

I don't think they'll change it, if they do, for a long, long time. What's wrong with it, btw, to those who want it changed? Not fancy enough? Not enough color? Now "www.aaa.com" on the side?  sarcastic

Just because the 787 fuselage is composite doesn't mean Boeing isn't looking for a finish that will appeal to AA's current paint scheme.

I hope AA never changes their paint scheme!

It's an opinion that the livery is timeless, classic, and beautiful. It's a fact that the livery isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Don't assume that. There may be alternatives for AA. They are not going to change their livery just for a single aircraft type.

The only thing you see left of TWA are some aircraft registrations and the occasional peeling of paint on the tail.

When AA orders the 787, undoubtedly, the planes will be painted light gray or silver. Other than that, AA may tweak the livery, such as a subtle change is shades of red and/or blue, or maybe change the typeface, or change from the stylized eagle to one that was used with prior liveries.

But don't expect a completely new livery. The current one is very recognizable and doesn't look at all dated.

AA's livery is a brand within itself. There's no way they'll ever get rid of it, modify it slightly maybe, but no major departures.

AA to me is still the lightening bolt and the eagle (and Mercury service). Yes, the current scheme is timeless, however, times do change. Those of us who grew up with the lightening bolt and the eagle remember a different type of airline industry. One of service, prestige, and total passenger concern. If some really terrific graphic design and "Landor"-type company hit paydirt with typeface, colors, and logos, AA would be reborn. There are lots of talented people in this world who can make a difference. Imagination and creativity can bring a lot of old ideas to life again. Maybe clean out some of the old cobwebs that are still holding some things back.....

They'll change it to celebrate taking delivery of NW's DC9s.

They will probably polish as much as possible on the 787s and have the rest grey as they initially did on their A300s. Doesn't look as nice, but it is still the same branding.

I have to agree with you 110%! Well said. Myself I wish they would do something to it, as it might be timeless to some, to me having looked at it for so many years, it just looks tired and old.

Yeah, when NW retires it's DC-9s.  Wink

On a more serious note, it is a classic looking livery that looks great. Why Change.
