Airliners Doing Touch-and-gos

Has anyone ever seen an airliner do touch-and-go's at an airport for a long time? Like 6 or so hours? One time while golfing at a course near COS, I kept seeing the same AA 737NG doing touch and go's for about 6 hours. I would've liked to listen to ATC on my scanner to see what was going on, but I was golfing. Also, I wondered why would they do this at COS, because the most amazing thing we see at COS is the occasional Tower Air 747. Thanks.

Pilot training flights. While virtually all AA line pilots are trained in simulators, AA checkairmen (and many of the first line pilots for a new aircraft) receive initial training in both simulator and aircraft.

Why COS? Probably because the landing fees are low and the flight would not interrupt normal operations too much nor would normal airport ops interrupt the training.

I am assuming that Tower Air is always charter flights for the military. I'm sure near Colorado Springs has Air Force Base Academy. That's why you saw Tower Air in COS arpt recently. I am not sure 100% if they charter flight carry military.

Thanks guys. Big777jet, you're probably right about the Tower Air, the US Air Force Academy, Peterson AFB, and Fort Carson are all near COS.

I've seen United 747's doing them at OAK... Their widebody maintenance facility is there...

Saw an MEA 720 doing touch-and-gos at Beirut International airport in 95!

'Zero time' simulators are OK (so realistic that you can get a type rating without ever flying the heavy iron) but everyone still does Base Training (as opposed to Line Training, which is on scheduled flights with a Training Captain in the left hand seat). Many planes have been lost doing engine out exercises, so emergency procedures are kept to sims. Delta lost a DC9 (along with one of their best training captains, and a few cadets) when the aircraft was pounding the circuit along with an American DC10 doing the same thing, at the Fort Worth Airport (not DFW). The DC9 intercepted the DC10's wake turbulence after making a shortcut on base leg, and rolled over and crashed next to the runway.

I've been in the jumpseat during Base Training on smaller planes, and it's fun but there is still an element of danger, especially in a busy circuit. Knowing what I know now, I would have stayed on the ground, although it was great fun at the time.

Shannon airport in Ireland is sometimes used for crew training. It's long runway, and small amount of traffic make it ideal. I was down there one day when a Lufthansa B747-200 was doing touch and goes for about 2 hours. Then it taxied into the terminal, refueled and headed back to Frankfurt.

Virgin Atlantic send their trainees to do touch and go exercises at Belfast International very frequently - they can do them for 6 or 8 hr stretches at a time.

Did you see any of United DC10,747,767,777 or 757 in Indianapolis airport? Indianapolis has United maintenance facility base.

BWIA has done touch-and-go operations at its POS base. When I was in secondary school I had a view overlooking POS and was able to see their MD83s and L-1011-500s do touch-and-go in the afternoons, when air traffic was light. I do not know when or where they do them now, especially as POS air traffic has grown somewhat.

When I first moved to Louisville, I can remember UPS doing touch & gos @ Standiford Field with their B747s. A friend of mine and I went to a college football game (Louisville vs Cincinnati) and the stadium was located right next to the airfield. Well, everybody was enjoying the game, except I was looking up in the air watching heavies going around and around; very cool!!! Unfortunately training flights are not allowed @ Louisville anymore, because of resident complains.

Good ole SWF (Stewart Airport) in Newburgh, NY has it happen often. Since it has a large runway (11,000 feet), not much traffiic, and is only 80 miles north of JFK, we get all types around here. Besides C5 from the NY Air National Guard base here, I 've seen UA 777, numerous A-300, 767, 737, 727 and DC-8 (Emory Air). We even had the Concorde spend a few hours doing touch and goes about three years ago. In fact, if anyone knows how to get a schedule of these events, I could get some really good pictures to post. I live about 6 miles from the airport and in the approach pattern, but usually by the time I react and get over there, the show is over!!!

When I lived in Pendleton, OR (PDT), I would see 737s doing touch and gos all the time. They would be painted in all different schemes. The whole town would come out to see it. One time, everyone was so excited that we were getting jet service from Air France. I think Boeing also uses Grant County-Moses Lake for the 777s and the 747s.

I heard that Boeing is using Moses Lake airport for the reasons testing takeoffs and landings before delivery new aircraft to the airlines.

Back in 1983 or 84 I saw a Qantas 747 doing touch and goes at Melbournes Avalon Airport, which has a very long runway and is not really used that much at all

AT YHM I have seen AC DC-9s doing touch and goes. About 2 months ago there was un A310 doing touch and goes but I couldnt see the airline becasue the jet was directly over my house and it was in the evening and like in the early 90 everyday there would either be a AC 747 767 doing touch and goes and I have seen a few Royal and others doing touch and goes.

Hi guys. I live here in COS. Peterson AFB and KCOS are the same facility. They share runways.

There is a lot of flight testing and crew training conducted here at COS for a couple of reasons, it's high altitude and relative low amount of traffic.

I've seen Delta's 764 here on several occasions doing TNG's and recently an unidentified 717 has been around.

I live about 5 miles south of the airport and directly under the flight path (I feel lucky for that). It's a great place to spot from.

Mind, I have seen a F28 do touch and goes all day long at Perth Airport. I always presumed it was just training!

Hey there. Yep, I'm in Widefield, about 1/2 mile SW of the park that UAL 585 crashed in.

I think you might be right about the TNG thing. The last time I saw DAL's 764 here, it was using 17L. I can't think of any reason for that so it must be just coincidence.

The only planes that I have seen use 30 are the Academy's Dash 6 and private single pistons. I can't see the approach path of 12 from where I am so I don't know about that one.

Have you found any good spotting locations? Seems to me that if you could park off of Marksheffel you could get a good view of 35R/17L.

Hey. Most of the places I like to spot at are on or around Peterson. My favorite place is on Stewart Road on Peterson near the golf course. You are about 300 yards in front of 17L lined up. It's really cool. On a rare wind free day you can actually feel the wake turbulence. See ya.

Did the F28 have a blue and white paint sceme? Ithink you'll find its CASA's F28 doing ILS calibrations, which does include alot of touch and goes

I really cant remember, although I have a feeling it was just a Ansett F28. I havent seen it been done for a while now, but as you most probably know, Ansett have retired all there F28s now, of which might explain it.
Although there is another one at Perth Airport. Got a new paint job on it but it never seems to go anywhere.

Reeve Aleutian took their 727's down to Cold Bay, Ak. in 83 when they first got them...I remember as a kid watching the plane touch down from the dining room window and then running to the living room window to watch them on the downwind leg.

when i was a very, very, very little kid. we used to live near farenbraugh(spelling?). or maybe it was before i was born. anyways, we used to always see(and hear!) the concord doing touch and goes and some high speed flybys. i wish i could remember it
