As an ex Marketing staff of a travel agency I have tried numerous airlines. From my personal experience in airlines from ASEAN ( Thai , Singapore , PAL , Garuda , MAS , MAI , Royal Brunei , Vietnam Air and Royal Air Cambodge )

I would like to catagorize it :
Best FA attitude : Thai Airways , Royal Brunei
Worst : Garuda
Best Entertainment : Singapore Airlines
Worst : Cambodge ( ATR ) , Royal Brunei
Best Food : Thai Airways , Malaysia Airlines
Worst : MAI
Best On-Time performance : Singapore , MAS
Worst : Garuda , PAL and Cambodge
Best Seat Pitch : Thai Airways , Malaysia airlines
Worst : MAI ( 734 ) , Cambodge ( 734 )
Best "Asian Touch" : Vietnam Airlines , Thai Airways , Singapore
Worst : none really....

I would say.. the best overall would be Singapore Airlnes.. the great way to fly.. too bad I can't apply as a Singapore Girl >

I would like to recomend Thai airways who are just great.
If you look at F28-PBair's categorizing above, you will see that Thai is one of the best in 4 out of 6 categories, and never one of the worst.
They are very good in three of the most important categories which are FA's attitude, Food, and Seat Pitch. The only thing they not are that good in is entertainment. (nice audio, but only main screens)
Thai has also an interesting and well mainteaned fleet.

I would have to say Singapore Airlines for South East Asia; and

Cathay Pacific for North Asia.

I agree with Rotate777, Cathay Pacific is the best in Asia. They have a youngest fleet in the world.

Cathay is good no doubt but only if they can continue delivering a consistent service. Just look at their PTVs, in their hurry to grab hold of more capacity, they leased in A340s from Air China and did not even bother to refit them!

To the passenger, what kind of impression does this form? Go and think about it!

Cathay Pacific is a carrier for North East Asia.....and this question asked for South East Asia.

The major (flag) carriers for South East Asia are

1)Vietnam Airlines
2)Royal Air Camboge
3)Thai Airways
4)Myanmar Airways
5)Malaysia Airlines
6)Singapore Airlines
7)Royal Brunei Airlines
8)Garuda Indonesia
9)Philippine Airlines

The best is Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways.

In response to your question, the Airbus A340 that Cathay Pacific has leased from Air China is only for 2 years and it would not make sense or justify the cost of CX to install PTV's for such a short period. Why should CX improve Air China's product at its cost. CX uses these aircrafts on short distances (ie regional services in Asia).

If you are so concerned about CX and its consistency, I don't think SQ can talk much about its many Airbus A310 aircrafts that they have. They tend to fly regional routes that cover more than 2-3 hours in length without PTV's.

In conclusion, if you don't have something constructuve to say then don't say it and please get your facts right if you are abusing an airline for consistency service. I respect SQ and CX for its customer service and like both airlines very much...in my view these two carriers are the best in the world for professional service delivery...Virgin is good for FUN not business travel.

CX & SQ

Sun May 21, 2000 10:55 pm

hmm..i think SQ is the best and Thai Airways is not good 4 long-haul routes only 4 short range(e.g. Penang,Malaysia to bangkok thailand; bangkok to ho chi minh city (saigon))

coz:
-thai airways has quite a few crash records and maintainance doenst seems to be good
-thai airways's B777,747, MD-11 & A330's seat pitch is very cramped-very uncomfortable during fligts
-thai airways frequency is not high
-but their service is quite good
-but their air hostes are polite
-but their food are quite delicious

oh ya, CX is good....but it doesnt seemed to be committing A3XX...wat a disappointment to Airbus..but it is still the best airlines in Asia...coz the youngest fleet they have in da world(A330/340,B777-200,300,B747-200,400)it is justifiable that sumone said that the PTV is not necessary on a leased aircraft. Oh ya, an incident of CX..Once last winter, CX A330-300 arrived fm an evening flight fm Hong Kong-Penang(Malaysia), while the plane is exitting the runway after landing at PEN Int'l, as u may know the airport is very small and the runway length is like old Kai Tak's (i think a biut shorter)and there is a taxiway to exit fm runway which is 4 small planes like 737 or smaller, but the pilot who was pilotting A330 used that small taxiway, as it turns, the whole main landing gear went over the mud and was unable to get up after a few attempts of applying small thrust until the pilot stop the engines and apply a ( think)40% thrust

i'm confusEd....why is it sometimes Hong Kong is mentioned undeR South East Asia, while some other times it is mentioned as NOrth or east Asia? Hong Kong is not in the beseto region so it should be regarded as South-east asia. i believe itS only regions further up NOrth from Taiwan are to be considered East Asia.
sO i gueSS Cathay can rigHtfuLLy competE in this South EAst Asia CAtegorY.
In my opinion, Cathay is very good and efficient. And they are in the better-thaN-average league like SIA. I wouLd emphasize that it is the batch of FAs u happen to get on that flight that makes or breaks it.
The onLy minus to Cathay is their corporate image...or rather their colors and FA uniforms, esp the latest ones... In this aspect, SIA wins hands down, with one of the nicest livERy in thE skieS and the traditional, sassy kerbaya dresses & slippers.
I like to also commend on Thai attendants great, and genuine ( at least that's what i see) hospitality. however, they do faLL short in terms of entertainment and seat pitch in their 777s.

Cathay cannot compete in this category...not because of anything...but simply on Geography and the recognition of Hong Kong as a part of China.

Hong Kong has always promoted itself to be a gateway to China, and not SEA (South East Asia).

The Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), had only recognise 10 members in this grouping, and HKG is not included.

But Cathay would be the BEST in Northeast Asia category.
