747-8F Longer Than The 747-8I, Why Not...?

Wed Nov 16, 2005 6:31 am

Why wouldn't Boeing offer the 747F version as a pax version as well?

From Boeing:

"The 747-8 Intercontinental passenger airplane will be stretched 3.6 m (11.7 ft) compared to the 747-400 to accommodate 34 additional seats in a typical three-class configuration...

...The 747-8 Freighter will be 5.6 m (18.3 ft) longer than the 747-400 freighter..."

I understand they could fit on some extra pallets of cargo.......it just seems odd to have two differing sizes of the same named a/c.

Again, why wouldn't Boeing offer the 747F version as a pax version as well?
Ding! You are now free to keep supporting Frontier.

The passneger version will have the stretched upper deck, the freighter will not. So, given that the upper deck is heavier, the two planes would have a different center of gravity. By stretching the freighter the designers compensate for that.

Hope this helps,

From what I have read, the big reason for the 2 sizes is the weight and balance. Since the freighter versionlacks the longer hump, they have to add more in the front then they would with the pax version.

Speaking of center of balance and CG, check out this beautiful rendering of the graceful wings of this new airliner ... it is sexy!
