Asiana Vs Aeroflot

Sat May 20, 2000 11:40 pm

11nov98

Asiana 747-400 was too wide on the turn to the gate in ANC next to an Aeroflot IL62, loaded with pax,and decided to do a U-turn in the parking bay. His No 1 engine impacted the IL62's wing and tore open the engine cowling and the fuel lines on the 747 - fuel now spraying all over the apron. More power. It was icy and skid started. Took out 2 Evergreen staff vehicles. Still more power and he puts his left wing (last 15-20 feet)into the vertical stab of the IL62 and cut into the tail about 15 feet. When he reached the mair spar of the vertical stab..the 747 stopped... you guessed it...more power. In trying to escape the grips of the Russion aircraft he reached take-off thrust and put a bunch of containers into the terminal building.Still no shutdown or evac and fuel is still spraying everywhere from the No 1 engine. Finally they get him to shut-down. In the end they had to cut 20 feet off the Asiana's wing to free the two aircraft. No Injuries. This was reported to be a Captain's eyewitness account.

Ouch! In the last Airliners magazine I think there was a picture of the Il-62 parked at Anchorage with the winglet still int the tail. Great story

What happened to the Asiana B747-400 involved? I know that the IL-62 involved was eventually scrapped, but how about the 747?

Aeroflot can't be too happy about that!

I wonder if that 747 was the same one I was on back in 1997. That would be interesting.
So what happened to the 747? Is it being fixed?

"What happened to the Asiana B747-400 involved?" What happened to the CREW, don't you mean? They should have had a red hot poker up their arses for this. I knew about the incident but I didn't know they thought going hell for leather with the throttles would be a good idea!

BTW, don't 747s look amazing in Asiana livery? Wow, what a sight.

The Asiana 747, HL7414, went back to service.
I had taken a photo of HL7414 after this incident.
