Delta Moving 777s & MD-11s To More Domestic Routes

Sun May 21, 2000 12:15 am

Within the past 2 months there has been a major influx of both MD-11s and 777s traveling to Florida, New York-Kenned, and other destinations. Between ATL & MCO there will be 5 777s doing round trips every day until September when the MD-11s are moved back to more domestic routes. Something even more amazing is the fact that the MD-11 is returning to Florida every once in awhile. Not since the MD-11 was first delivered has this ever happen. In conversations with pilots Delta is waiting on its China routes approvement before deciding on which 777 model to order.

I think they will have to use MD11's to Hawaii. The B767 400 is not a real replacement of the L1011! I doubt think they would be using B777's as they are much newer.

Hawaii is low yield, as many people use their Frequent Flier miles to go there, so airlines generally don't use their latest equipment. The MD-11 would be good for Hawaii. United and American have hung on to their DC-10s mainly for Hawaii routes. I bet the TriStar will be used to Hawaii almost to the end. The only problem with the MD-11 is having Business Elite seating, while all other airlines to Hawaii have their aircraft in domestic configuration.

On Justplanes.com I read Delta would be moving the 77s to ATL-TPA or ATL-MCO routes to familiarize pilots with it.

I was on a Delta 777-200 yesterday on a flight from MCO to ATL. They need this high capacity aircraft along with the MD-11s & 767s to handle this busy route because of the Disney 2000 millenium celebration that is going on.

What are the regularly scheduled domestic MD-11 routes?

Currently there are none, they are being put in as needed. Once more 777s arrive they will be moved for good.

MD-11 To Mco?

Sun May 21, 2000 10:34 am

When will the MD-11 return to MCO? It has been YEARS since I've seen on here. I'd love to see it fly in again. I read a post about 4 months ago that they would in the spring, but that hasn't happened. I know of 1 that was at TPA though.

What's the point of using widebodies for flights within the US (aside from Hawaii and long range high yield flights like JFK-LAX) They have so much range and capacity (and are blasted expensive) that Delta could buy more narrow-bodies and serve their markets better. Use widebodies for long range flights.

They definitely need the capacity during peak times on Florida routes. I was on a 767 that was overbooked from TPA-ATL on Delta, so they do need to use widebodies on some routes within the US. Delta uses MD-11's between Cincinatti and Portland, but I do not know if this flight continues to Asia or not.

Does anyone see a chance that MD-11s or 777s could possibly come to FLL or MIA? DL operates L10s on these routes so either of these two aircraft would seem perfect for the job.

As for the CVG-PDX MD-11 flight, it continues to Asia. Nagoya, Japan to be exact.
Delta also flies an MD-11 between ATL and PDX which continues to Tokyo.

The 777 is a frequent unofficial visitor to FLL and MIA these days.
