Lufthansa And The Football Nose

Thu Nov 17, 2005 12:38 am

When I was at FRA airport yesterday, I saw a 320 and a 340 from LH with the football nose. Anybody knows how many of them are flying?

40 planes will carry the football-nose.

LH as offical partner even launched a website.

I think about 20 from the fleet are flying; I have seen also a 747 and 735 with the nose.

I think the soccer nose looks rather good on the 737. Somebody has a picture of the 747 with soccer nose? I'm curious how that will look like.  Smile

I think it's a smart move of LH to paint the noses, it's cheap to paint but will certainly attract some attention. But wasn't EK also sponsoring the championship? Isn't that a bit strange, 2 airlines sponsoring the same championship?

All,

There is neither an S in FIFA nor UEFA, so it is not soccer.  banghead .

The 'F' stands for FOOTBALL in English and many European languages adopt a similar word (e.g. Fussball in German).

For the record, "soccer" comes from "Association Football" which will gain you very negative brownie points if you use this phrase in any European village, city or town.

And I don't want to start another A vs B thread!

From Airliner World's Nov 2005 issue:

"Lufthansa has introduced what is descibes as a 'football nose' on more than 30 of its aircraft to help promote the World Cup, due to take place in Germany next summer. The first aircraft, an A340-300, was unveiled in late july, and others, including this A320-211 D-AIQP [picture of said a/c] above, have been introduced in past months"

Emirates is the official sponsor of the FIFA World Cup 2006, Lufthansa is just a sponsor of the DFB (German Football Union) but they pretend to be an official sponsor of the World Cup as well by painting these ridiculous looking football on their planes.

Their newest timetable is even showing a logo that shows a football with the caption "LH2006". That is so pathetic that it is actually quite funny.

Lufthansa later added "we realise that painting this on an Airbus first will probably cause wild speculation on that world famous internet site "notgettingany.net" aka "airliners.net" of favouritism by Lufthansa of Airbus aircraft over our Boeing aircraft, or the fact that we referred to the game as 'football' because it bloody well is 'football' rather than 'soccer', neither would we like to comment on the Wright or Wrong Amendment, whether Ryanair will fly transatlantic, or who really shot JR."

... Yes, EK is the official airline of the worldcup! LH actually has nothing to do with the sponsoring of the games.

LH is however the official partner of the German Football Association.

Then on a bit different note. I think it's LH who will make the money out of the games, not EK.

For a relatively small proportion of the globe: correct. Most Asians, Africans, Europeans, South Americans and those from Australasia use a different word, if they can comprehend English.

Some 250 million (tops) out of ca 8 billion people worldwide want to use a different word and certain of these people want to display such quoibles on internet forums.  wink .

Did I mention anything about any game I enjoy in my post? In case you're talking about what they call 'American football', sory mate, I think it's worse than soccer. I don't fancy watching 50 guys in skin tights really. If you ask me, women beach volleyball is the best game out there. While LH is somewhat jumping the bandwaggon of the World Championship 2006 with their football(!) nose design, one has to admit that this is typical LH management style: maximum positive return with a minimum of investment. Big grin

Which is not a bad strategy, is it? I don't understand what's so bad about these football noses. Yes, they are butt ugly but I think they will profit from that campaign. No one (except Sabena 332) cares if they are an official sponsor. It's just clever. If it was O'Leary's idea Sabena332 (and some other LH haters) would be the first to jump up for a big hooray.

Having watched 3 Super Bowl Games, various College Football Games (one Live at the Rutgers Stadium in New Jersey) I still do not think that football is a sport.
Every 5 minutes they make a break, run a few yards, then stop again, to make a break and after that run again a few yards just to stop again interrupted by a big cuddle of big men......and you Americans have the nerve to call "soccer" -as you call the real game of football" boring. They aren´t maybe so many goals but at least there is action on the field. The only action on an American Football field I have noticed is during half time and the performance of the cheerleaders.

I feel the football (soccer, to keep our fellow American friends happy.) noses are a fantastic addition to the LH fleet. On the topic of special nose schemes, as there been other airlines to adopt special nose schemes. One that springs to mind was bmibaby's G-BVZH that was named Red nose baby for a period to promote Comic Relief.

No, we're turning this into an B/S vs. A/F thread - with high security  Wink:

So, you all still simply think all this all about Fussball, Football, Soccer?
WRONG!

It's a top super-duper-bingo-secret thing. Its actually so secret that I must shoot myself when I've posted this post.

THESE FOOTBALL NOSES ARE MIMIKRI - they ae only made to blend us - "oh what a nice idea" - BS! The Fifa World Cup 2006 only delivers LH the opportunity to test - on behalf of the multi-national secret association of anti-terror agencies - a new system for Aircraft safety against outside attacks.
The football nose is part of the new system. Important is, what's BEHIND the nose:
- better conventional rader in 25% of its original size.
- Forward looking Infrared (FLIR) and integrated threat recognition and calssification system
- Laser targeting system
- Active Countermeasures (Flares, Chaff, Hi-Energy Laser) in the black parts of the football nose
- Radar jamming capabilities for radar homed missiles

On the winglets:
Backward Radar jammers and flare dispensers

Near the APU exhaust:
Backward looking Infrared (BLIR) and HI-Energy Laser

On A342s and A343s additionally:
Cold air mode for the hairdryers (against IR-seeking missiles)

Call me a lyer? Right on this one. But wouldn't that be an idea???

Just as an addition: not being an official sponsor of that FIFA-event LH (nor any other company) are allowed to use the logo or wording "WM2006" in their designs, that´s how FIFA gets the most of the money out of the sponsorship. For example, Hyundai became the official sponsor on the cars and transportation for this event, funny enough they do not have large busses so what will happen is they rent busses (e.g. Mercedes, MAN) and stick their logos above... so much about the sense of nowadays sponsorship with FIFA  eyepopping .
So taking into account all these rules (and one may like these football-noses or not) at least it is a smart idea to surround these rules and place a message out to the world.
