Air Southwest Expansion @ CWL

Thu Nov 17, 2005 12:51 am

Air Southwest announced today that they are going to be launching flights from CWL to NQY and MAN, with possible further expansion.

Excellent news for CWL!

Interesting.. an unexpected good news surprise for CWL.

Makes a lot of sense - Air Southwest already sell flights to MAN from NQY, but with an aircraft change at BRS.
The NQY-CWL-MAN service will remove this inconvenience and cut the time taken a little.

CWL-MAN is a route that should be viable, even though plenty of other airlines have tried and then decided otherwise (Business Air / Air Wales / Manx / British Regional)
A further benefit is that it means the link from CWL to South West England remains. IIRC Air Wales are dropping their PLH services from CWL, so there is an opportunity here for Air Southwest, even though it's a different airport.

Good News for CWL, it's nice to see business going there way.

But is this another nail towards the coffin of Air Wales.

I don't really understand why you think that would be?

It's not directly competing with Air Wales on any of their routes.

If Air Southwest decide they want to operate from CWL to DUB/NCL/ABZ then its time for Air Wales to get worried.
If Air Southwest starts operating services for bmiBaby, then it's time for Air Wales to get very worried....

What do you know about the finances of Air Wales to be able to make your statement anyway - I'm more than aware of the usual stuff about their promiscuity when it comes to opening and closing of new routes, so anything new would be of interest.

Cheers

I don't know of any financial problems at Air Wales.

Just seems to be another carrier on there Turf, that has a proven track record and good history.

Air Wales track record is good, but not as good as Air Southwest.

Hopefully Air Southwest will look at launching a Bristol-Humberside route, once daily like the NWI flights could work.

Is there any market at all for HUY-BRS?

Does anybody else think that Air Southwest may look at launching CWL-LGW? Possibly operating 2x daily and then 1x on Saturday & Sunday.

Any other possible routes from CWL?

Chris

Why Gatwick in particular?

The reason I said LGW, was because Air Southwest already fly to LGW from BRS, NQY and PLH.

Is there sufficient connecting traffic to make a route like this worthwhile? KLM already have much of the world covered via AMS.

Additionally, AMS is a tourist and business destination, whilst LGW is not.

easyJet at BRS has proved some unexpected routes can work. In doing this they've also removed much of the opportunity from CWL.

The most glaring omission from CWL seems to be BRU. Perhaps a route to GLA would work, but could the PIK route still be supported?

The same could be set about BRS surely. BRS has a KL service to AMS and also has a service with EZY. Personally, I believe that a route to any airport in London could be sustained from CWL. As long as the route was 2x daily, I see no problem with it not working.

I agree with you to some extent, however I still believe that routes such as MAD, MUC, BCN, MXP all have the ability to work from CWL, even if BRS have them with EZY.

As for BRU, I cannot understand why there is no service from CWL to BRU. Surely SN must take a lot at CWL. Would a DH-8 be viable on the CWL-BRU route? As for GLA, there is already the PIK service, however I think it should be CWL-GLA, not CWL-PIK.

How about VLM Airlines, they must have some interest in CWL-LCY?

Chris

I think you're missing my point here. The question is whether there are sufficient passengers prepared to use a CWL-LGW service for connecting services to elsewhere in the world.
Using KLM you can check-in at CWL and (hopefully ) collect your bags wherever you are going to.
Any airline that would want to operate a service to a London airport would have to be able to offer the same facility.

Whilst easyJet have competed with KLM on the BRS-AMS service, I believe frequency has been reduced. It'll be interesting to see how bmiBaby fare with their CWL-AMS service - presumably aimed at the leisure traveller to Amsterdam and not people wishing to travel elsewhere using AMS as a hub.

It does not appear that there is the level of business to support an air service from South Wales to London. The FGW rail service from Cardiff to London offers frequent services, routing to and from far more central points than CWL or LHR/LGW airports.

I agree in principle - there must be some scope from CWL. The problem is that easyJet (and Bristol airport) have done such a good job at BRS the opportunity for CWL is limited.

Quoting Christa (Reply 12):

Looks like bmiBaby agree as it is reported that they will switch their route back to GLA.

Anything is possible, though I guess they would also have interest in BRS or BHX or a multitude of other airports in Europe and UK for services to LCY.

I think its good, WOW are popular at MAN, and a lot of people use them, specially the BRS/PLY via NQY.
