Wow! I wasn't expecting that?

Now there are all kinds of questions:

Will 'ATHENS' take up some or all of Olympic's fleet?

Will the route structure remain similar?

What kind of fafre structure will the new airline have?

Will the new airline be making orders?

Of course it's far too early to answer any of these.... but your thoughts?

It was obviously in a bad way so better that it passes away.

When I read through the privatization proposals 5 years ago they weren't anything a private investor would take seriously.

The name "Athens" has a ring to it. Might be good.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

I would imagine the new corporate entity will be staffed and managed by the same people who ran Olympic.

Well, Olympic are still allowing you to book via their website and there is no News on their website yet.

Somehow i'd think they'd stop booking if this was going to happen, no?

And Amy, i think all of what you listed are OA's problems so why create a new airline to do the same as OA?

Thanks

There are just a few airlines that just don't want to die, even if that is the only logical thing they could do... Amongst them are AZ and OA.
So until we actually get to see that there is no more Olympic flights and the planes all being parked at ATH I won't believe any kind of death of this airline.
They simply just don't want to die...

ERT.gr NEWS

From the above website:
According to information about the new air carrier:
It will be smaller than the current company.
Domestic and European flights will probably be reduced.
The fleet will be made up of approximately 30 planes (as opposed to 40 owned currently) Apart from the flight department, the new company will include the technical base and ground handling activities, which had been separated two years ago.
The number of employees will be reduced by approximately 50%. The extra staff will either depart through the voluntary redundancy scheme or be transferred to other public services.
It will start operating sometime between of 26 March and the beginning of April 2006.
The tickets that have already been sold are valid, while all the flights will be performed as normal.
The new name will contain the term Olympic, with possible names being Olympic Air, Air Olympic or Olympic Aviation (in Greek). The 5-circle logo will be retained in all cases.
The new company will start from zero, with a new business plan, new administration, new capitals and new labour relations.
The public sector’s participation will be between 33% and 49%, while the majority of the capitals and the management will come from the private sector.
The European Union considers the plan for the new company compatible in principle.

The casual observer will never know the difference.

I can see the same thing happening with AZ if they run into the same problems. After all the money is gone, where would they go then? Oh, no worries, we'll just shut you down and create a new carrier!

So what's changing? I guess OA won't have to repay the 600Euros then?

You know, with the risk of sounding biased here, I think that Sabena's
collapse was the most extravagant case of an airlines dead in Europe, even
more so then SR. I mean literally the entire fleet was grounded and BRU
airport was transformed into an airline graveyard. The company that survived
was DAT and they didn't take over any of the widebodyjet's and SN network
until SN Brussels airlines proved itself successful and was able to afford
re-opening some Africa routes itself. With other airlines it all just seems like
a government sceam to me with results staying in the red.
I think that the Sabena-SNBA story is a clear textbook example how to
really turn the tides of an airline that just is not capable of making money!

KLMCedric is right.

Companies like Olympic and Alitalia are just burning money. I think the new "Olympic" will end up just like Swiss...more money to be wasted, and for what reason? For "one of the best liveries in the world"?
I don`t think that the taxpayer will ever see one cent of the wasted money allready put into Olympic...same goes with Alitalia.

Same reason as why the EU moves all it's thousands of staff and documents from Brussels to Strasbourg once a month... it gives dodgy politicians a chance to stuff a wad of cash in there pocket to keep an airline running.

Every wondered why Air France seems to be the only option to Strasbourg from Brussels and the price for the few hundred miles is more than a flight to new york only for a few weeks a month.
So far in 2008 45 flights and Gold already. JFK, IAD, LGA, SIN, HKG, NRT, AKL, PPT, LAX still to book ! Home Airport LCY

And why would it be impossible for a successor to Olympic based on private capital to succeed ? As far as Swiss is concerned, I would not call it wasted money. I think there are many other airlines already in Europe for which you could say that more appropriately.

If this happens as it should have already happened long ago, they could succeed. They have always been successful until they fell into the hands of the Greek government.

AND YES, the livery of Olympic is beautiful, especially the dark blue one single cheatline, perfect background for the rings.

It does seem inevitable, but have in mind how many "interested" parties are involved there. They talk about privatization, bankruptcy, job cuts, but nothing actually happens. As long as JAT is treated as somebody's cash-cow nothing will actually change and it seems that many involved in JAT don't see many reasons for change. Hey, after all, it is a company that charges you twice. First, with every little thing you buy in a shop (through taxes) and second time when you actually buy a ticket, which is, by the way, often very expensive.

Quoting Olympicbis (Reply 37):

I do wish new Olympic all the best, but, just like in case of JAT, if there are not many employees ready to contribute and if they're number is much smaller than the number of those who see the airline only as the place where one can get benefits, nothing much will change. Personally, I do hope that new airline will keep all those honestly dedicated to the airline.

I guess im a little confused as to how Olympic died, and yet they are going to just re-create the airline and call it Athens, how is that suppose to change anything, could it be the fact that Greece doesnt have THAT much demand for travel there? Or possibly the routes they fly just dont make sense.

Well it's probably a good thing OA didn't fly to YVR, as I am sure the YVROAC (Vancouver Olympic Authority) would try to ban them from using the word Olympic in their advertising! (For those of you who know how stronghanded the YVROAC has been in the past few months!)

It is sad indeed and i feel sorry for all the staff involved  Sad

But - Olympic has been given years to shape up , change its working practices and become competitive - while at the same time swallowing Millions of Euros from the European Union, and i mean Millions.....

It had to happen in the end really , as in Europe, state aid is unfair - pity the same does not apply in the United States as all the airlines will just keep wallowing in and out of chapter 11 while being unable to reshape because of falsely bloated accounting and unviable carriers remaining in business.....

In case you have missed it,
SWISS is now part of your Luftwaffe increasing it's EBIT profits quarterly without any wasted money!

KLMCedric points out to the fact that old SN was completely wiped off the table by the curators and only acted in the interest of where money could be aquired as fast as possible.
So DAT was the only part that in there eyes had a potential of profitabilty.
Now with all due respect to the profit of SN Brussels Airlines, what they created is an airline that is no longer able to compete should they recommence decent international services...
And ex staff like me is seeing (ex) competitor airlines staff doing my previous job...
Think about it!
