Where Have The MD-90's Gone?

Thu Nov 17, 2005 9:58 am

I have been reading some old threads about the MD-90 and how some operators want to get rid of the "oddball" of the fleet. My question is where are the planes current at? I dont mean one by one as in airline X has one in service. I know that delta has 16 of them, but from what I can find on the net, over 100 of them were built. Although the big carriers have no use for them, with over 100 out there, it could be a large fleet for a LCC. Just curious.

I have also read that MD-90's have no second hand value. Is the value of these really that bad due to the small numbers of them out there? How bad is bad in dollars?

WHERE HAVE ALL THE FLOWERS GONE
words and music by Pete Seeger
performed by Pete Seeger and Tao Rodriguez-Seeger

Where have all the MD-90's gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the MD-90's gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the MD-90's gone?
used to fly them every trip
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?

Where have all the widgets gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the widgets gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the widgets gone?
repainted every one
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?

Where have all the Tristars gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the Tristars gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the Tristars gone?
Gone to deserts every one
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?

Where have all the monies gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the monies gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the monies gone?
Gone to fuellers every one
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?

Where has all the Spirit gone?
Long time passing
Where has all the Spirit gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the Spirit gone?
Outta the fleet at the end of the month
When will we ever learn?
When will we ever learn?
And all at once the crowd begins to sing: Sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing are the same

SAS just sold some to Hello. Three more MD-90s escaping the dustbowl.

Bull.

They have a value, just not that great due to scarcity of numbers and odd engine type. That makes them harder to resell.

It's a shame Mad Dog was murdered by Boeing, if they had managed to survive and work out the MD-90 problems with some more fleet orders then they would have been truly great planes. Quiet and economical, with the V2500 which went on to be a superb engine on the A320 family after early difficulties.
Lead me not into temptation, I can find my own way there...

I always wonder why no airline is doing the opposite and tries to buy as many 2nd hand MD-90s as possible. It has often been said that its operation economics are great, just the fleets are too small for being economic. That could be fixed by acquiring more frames; and it would be a nice opportunity to get modern airplanes for a fair price.

Thats what I meant by low second hand value and a fleet for a LCC. I agree that the low numbers pose a problem if we had ten operators and each had ten frames. Not exactly the ideal situation, but if someone picked up more frames as A350 said, it seems as if it would make a great fleet. Although delta is not exactly trying to give them away, if someone wanted all 16 of them, I am 99% sure they would be sold. With airlines such as Allegiant, it seems they get more MD-80's by the hour! So it would seem like a great fit for someone like them.

I also read the other day on this forum that planes usually lease for 1% of their value per month. Is this true? I dont know what an Md-90 has for value, but I would assume it would be somewhat comparable to the newer MD-83's that allegiant acquires.

Still flying 16 of 'em... planning on keeping them at least through 2007 too!

Book your Tokyo-Osaka flight today!

Between JAL and Delta, that's 32 out of 100 accounted for. No idea of the others.

A number of MD-90's fly in Taiwan, UNI Air (operating for EVA Air) is one of the airlines using them there.

SV, MU, CJ/CZ have sizeable fleet and they aren't going anywhere for now. Both Chinese carriers can use every aircraft they can get.
JL isn't going to get rid of them until at least the less efficient MD-80s are gone.
Thus there's really no second-hand market because there weren't many built in the first place. Other than the ex-AA and ex-SK ones, there's not much more the be accountable for.

I flew on a Delta MD-90 a few weeks back. It looked like it was ready for the scrapyard it was so dilapidated. Also, I found the small overhead bins and general feel of the interior to be somewhat dated compared with the recent products from Boeing and Airbus. I don't know why anyone would seriously consider building a fleet of them.

Delta is currently in the process of putting new interior in their md80/90 fleet so although you may have been in one with outdated interior, that will soon change.
