Best Major European Airline

Sun May 21, 2000 3:52 am

European airlines have generally been very good in terms of service and routing networks. However, it seems that competition is getting tighter since many of the major European airlines such as British Airways and Swissair have upgraded their comfort levels and First class cabins. In your opinion, what major European airline is the best in terms of economy class, business class, and first class comfort and service. I'm thinking of flying from Los Angeles to Casablanca (via Zurich) with Swissair since I've heard it's the best all-around from many people. What do you think?

Your thoughts appreciated.

Hi

I can only speak about economy class.
I think that Swissair and Crossair are still the best in Europe. But SR doesn´t fly LAX-ZRH-CAS. So you have to change another time in GVA and stey there one night (!) and the journey will get very long!
I love Swissair.

This is the swissair first class seat. The arrangement 1-2-1 on the MD-11. I think its the best european first class and on par with SIA and CX.

Best Economy Class: KLM (great service for economy class)
Best Business -and Firts class: BA

If flying from LA to Casablance Swissair is a great choice. I would recommend you KLM, but since they transfered their KLM - Casablanca to Transavia Airlines (Dutch Charter Airline, with a few non-charter routes like Casablanca). Although this flight also carries a KLM number you will probably not like the transfer time. KLM's flight out of LA arrives in AMS at noon, but your connecting flight will leave for Casablanca at 21:00 when flying with KLM's partner Transavia (Most of the time this flight has severe delays). Tou can also fly Royal Maroc out of Amsterdam to Casablanca, which is a great airline and you will probably have 3 hours as transfer time. You will definitely enjoy flying Royal Air Maroc. But as you wanted to travel with just one airline I have to agree with you that Swissair is probably an excellent choice.

Have a nice trip.

I can tell that the business class of SR is not all that good. But economy is excellent. You get amenity kits and on demand PTVs (not all aircraft have them yet), very good meals and beautiful FAs. If you're flying in the back of the bus i would chose SR. To it seems that they are the last airline that cares about the coach passenger. But be aware, the fares are very high.

I would not recomend SR intra Europe. I was really dissapointed on the way back from Malaga (on the way going I was in C class) They treated the pax like pigs but I guess they were just tired because they allready flew the ZRH-Malaga. I much prefer Crossair!
Both have leather seats. Crossair serve free Champagne in all classes!

I would have to go for SAS Scandinavian airlines. Their lounges at the airports are really "cosy". The service both on ground and in the air is very good. The only problem is that SAS do not fly to Casablanca!

Virgin Atlantic is the best. British Airways is good too.

From my experineces with Swissair, I find it hard to believe they would treat their passengers like pigs!
I've also never been treated badly be a crew because it was their inbound sector and had already been on duty for 4 hours!!!!
Teahan, I thought you loved Swissair.

Swissair's service in Europe is great, wonderful aircraft, some of the best staff flying, very good aircraft, brilliant service and a phenomenal amount of legroom!!!
Crossair may have good service, but it has plenty of other problems! But then Teahan, you visit a PPilots forum, so you should know all about them

Best Regards

Jet Setter I know about there problems! SR traeted me and my Dad like pigs. They threw our meals in front of us like if we were animals! I do love SR but not because of there graet service! SR's legroom within Europe is 31 inches. They gave me and my family the opportunity to travel at discount rated. They gave my mother a job for 27 years until she retired. If you want to read about LX's problems go to: http://www.pprune.org/ubb/NonCGI/Forum1/HTML/007451.html Jet Setter stop trying to have a go at me!

I do not have a problem with SR. They are fab on long haul and the very short haul Pendulair (GVA-ZRH) flights but not so good on intra Europe! They introduced a new economy product and that did not help things!

Let me respond to a few points:

SR3496: You're right. To do the whole LAX-CAS journey on SR would be a bit long. It would be possible LAX-ZRH-GVA and then with Royal Air Maroc for the last leg without staying a night in GVA.

Avion: I have found SR C class excellent always - the little things count. eg I got a British Sunday newspaper on the flight ZRH-YUL departing Sunday lunchtime. In C, I expect a lot of space, good food and wine, peace and quiet when desired and good entertainment. SR provides all these (although MD11 C class IFE needs an upgrade which it will soon get with the introduction of DVD).

Teahan: I don't understand your criticism of SR either. In some posts you are very pro-SR, then suddenly you come out with a very angry anti-SR comment. Which is the true Jeremiah?

By the way, SR are my employer so maybe may comments could also be construed as being biased, although I try to be as neutral as possible on this forum.

If SR is your real employeer, can you tell more about the new flight facilities (3 stages) . It was in the SR News 1 or 2 months ago! I must admit in C class they are good but not in Y class!

I am just back from a LH trip to Frankfurt and it was as usual, in time, clean cabin and friendly staff. From what I can say, short to longhaul, LH is reliable in time and service. The only bad I mentioned was FRA-airport, there were rows for hours in front of the LH-counters, I was just lucky to check in at ETIX-machine.

I have no experience with other mayor European carriers but I heard only good thing´s about Sabena.

BTW, I made my very first flight on A320 this weekend and it is a great plane to fly with.

Jeremiah,

Do you mean by 3 stages the 3 classes?

Improvements are as follows, afaik

First:
New seat which turns into completely flat bed, 201cm long, 60cm wide.
Gourmet food.

Business:
No big change at present, except DVD in MD11s.

Economy long haul:
Water bottle in seat pocket.
Amenity kit (incl. headphones to keep)
Better food, better presented + snack service in galley

NB The above is all I can remember off hand. Others might tell more or different.

And yes, I really work for SR. Why would you doubt me

How about LAX-JFK, then go on Royal Air Maroc to Casablanca. I believe they serve this, or you could go to Toronto (YYZ) and pick up Maroc there.
