Interesting. BUT, B6 also is getting known as the airline that is not on time in a lot of press releases of late.

Not a surprise here. We all knew it would eventually happen and with FL's announcement i figured B6 wouldn't wait long to counter.

I think there's enough traffic between BOS and IAD to sustain business for both airlines. Does UA Express or UA mainline fly between IAD and BOS? I haven't looked online or in the OAG.

Good luck to both FL and B6!

This is not so much a slap in the face of FL as it is for UA...

Currently there are 9 flights a day, 5 with mainline, increasing to 10.5 flights per day in January... hopefully Independence exits sooner rather than later.

Not great for FL, but terrible for FLYI. I would think that any potential white knight investor in FLYI, based on an IAD hub, might have second thoughts.

I know DCA and LGA are preferred airports, but one has to wonder what the shuttle routes are truly worth in light of the new B6 and FL service.

B6 JFK-BOS as well.

Why doesn't B6 get into JFK-IAD? Their competition is only UAX, which on that route is terrible.

Wow, more capacity in the BOS-WASH market. Something GOT to give here soon. I-Air is the obvious choice, but I'm hoping this will open up UA's eye's to bump some PVD flights up to spread thier grip on the entire NE region versus just BOS and BDL...

Concur. DH has had trouble getting a frequent flier base. (Not to mention a profit...) B6 will tap into a growing BOS base.

I see FL and B6 competing for the pieces at IAD. However, this isn't great... both airlines are similar in size (~100 aircraft FL, IIRC 86 for B6 at end of 2005). I agree this will be hard on UA.

You have to also remember that two airlines are flying hourly shuttles into DCA as well. Add 10 or so UA flts, 4(?) FL flts, and 6 B6 flts and you are certainly getting to the over saturation point. And i highly doubt the numbers will stop there, FL and B6 will most likely add more flts.

I am not familiar with the market but how viable is IAD as a shuttle airport to BOS and potentially JFK down the road. B6 has been big on its in-flight service but for such short flts it probably won't mean much. With respect to FL and B6 on BOS-IAD won't it come down to loyal customers and a who has the lowest fare?

Also a key for these business shuttle routes between key NE markets is frequency. FL was on the verge of cancelling PHL-BOS because they only had 3 flts a day which was nothing against US' 15 or so and 6-8 each from AE and Delta Connection. The two regional carriers have since exited the market but WN has stepped in at PVD and MHT, however FL now has 7-8 flts BOS-PHL and i would speculate that they are doing much better than they were with only 3.

I love B6, but seriously, who wants to fly IAD-JFK??? Think about how unpractical that is. IAD is a one hour drive from DC and JFK is a one hours drive from NYC. FActor in checkin, flights, etc.... not many people would do this. At least not frequently!

Well I live in NYC Downtown, and getting to JFK will add another 15 and 20 minutes journey on a good day than getting to LGA. Getting to Queens is equallly bad, and JFK actually sort of gets a direct subway link and LGA requires some kind of transit from subway to bus. Of course, LGA has its own advantage especially 15-20 minutes means much for some high end corporation folks... but JFK-IAD actually will somewhat work for people, who work for companies that have bases near Dulles (lots of them), and folks who live out in Queens, and Brooklyn in NYC.

I already noticed that there were lots of business folks who flew JFK-BOS because it was really much cheaper than the shuttle by DL or US. Traffic into NYC is bad anyway on any weekday mornings... I actually see potentials on JFK-IAD, as well... of course it will not really completely threaten US or DL Shuttle's LGA-DCA, which is really downtown to downtown service... But it is good to have that option...

JFK-IAD can also tap into some of the connecting traffic too.

Flyi definitely will not like these new additional flights...

BTW, is Jetblue getting more EMB-190s? They only has three now... Or some of the Boston to JFK flights will get the larger A320s?

Give me a break. Do they pump you guys full of that blue juice? From the second FL announced this route, the common thought was that B6 would soon match it. It certainly is no surprise. As has been stated above, its a shot at DH, and UA is going to be caught in the crossfire. Keep dreaming, FL will be just fine.

It's a slap in the face for FL because they just announced it last week.. B6 is sort of saying, "No way are we gonna let you take that route without a fight." Notice how their launch date is before AirTran's. The announcement of this route was basically so that they could get into the market before FL.

Now that's a slap in the face IMO. I think this is more geared toward jumping onto the route before FL rather than competing against DH. If they wanted to compete against DH, they would have already launched JFK-IAD and some more IAD flights (which we'll be seeing very very soon to Florida, California, etc.).

Why don´t they fly DCA-BOS if they aim to attract mostly business travelers (at least that´s what I guess) ?

Because IAD is our focus city. Which means there is connecting possiblities via IAD that you don't get at DCA with jetblue.

As per the press release, BOS-Washington is a big market (see following quote from the release). While I'll agree DCA is a more attractive airport for most of the customer base, I have no doubt this route will be popular. Partially due to the press of two LCC's launching the route!

Best of luck Jet Blue. You should have no problem packing those IAD-BOS flights. We stack em and pack em out of BWI FL. To my fellow colleagues at J.B. when dealing with BOS pax just make sure, you have a sense of humor, thick skin and a little empathy. Life must be not too good up in Bean Town. Expect plenty of tardy passengers and flight hopping. Trying to go earlier at a whim. And when you get delays, you will be in the same boat as many celebrities at the mercy of the paparrazzi/ or a poliltician being grilled by the media for the latest alledged scandal. There will also be some fun times.

Exploit? B6 and DH had a contract in which both airlines could use each other's companies to get Crew home via non-revving. I don't know for DH but I do know that B6 extends this courtesy of free travel to all airlines, even if the favor isn't returned.

So I'm really not so sure who's exploiting who.

As a Flight Attendant who's own airline doesn't allow us to jumpseat, I am EXTREMELY grateful for B6's policy on allowing any crewmember from any airline to jumpseat on their aircraft. It shows you what kind of airline they are.

With our new service from JFK-AUS/SAT (I work for Shuttle America) I've had at least one jumpseating B6 pilot on every flight, and I have to tell you, they are a great bunch of people! They are so nice, even to us flight attendants! I've seen more than one of them wait to be the last one off the aircraft after helping us cross seatbelts and clean the cabin, and these are pilots! You guys are great!

Back to the topic, I can't wait for this new service to start, I have a lot of downtime on layovers on the east coast coming up and would love to jumpseat up to Boston or one day down to DC for a day or vv. Hopefully if these flights do well enough they'll inaugurate JFK-IAD and I can do it! Congrats B6!

It's a slap in the face for FL because they just announced it last week.. B6 is sort of saying, "No way are we gonna let you take that route without a fight." Notice how their launch date is before AirTran's. The announcement of this route was basically so that they could get into the market before FL.

I noticed the earlier start date, too. And JetBlue's launch date is still after the end of Independence's auction-filing window given in their bankruptcy filing (Jan. 5). So JetBlue probably isn't planning to have to compete with DH either.

As the JetBlue press release noted, the DC area-Boston area market has incredible density. There are probably at least 1.5 million-2 million people for whom Dulles is a reasonable option or even closer than DCA, and there is a huge business corridor from Tysons to IAD. I wouldn't be surprised if the route turns out to sustain JetBlue *and* AirTran along with UA. BWI sustains 8x FL daily to BOS, plus the 13x BWI-PVD and 11x BWI-MHT, and some AE to BOS.

Interesting that JetBlue seems to be using their EMB-190's for new city pairs so far. Looks like ROC, BUF, SYR may get to keep their A320's to JFK for awhile longer. Still watching for ROC-BOS and BUF-BOS.

Nevertheless, I don't see any connection possiblities. First off, no one from IAD would fly all the way up to BOS to make a connection on another JetBlue flight. Second of all, no one from BOS would connect at IAD as BOS already has or will have non-stop options to all cities B6's IAD ops has.

Now, if we're talking about international connections, that could be another story. However, I'm sure JFK would be a much more attractive international connection destination.

Not trying to burst your bubble! Just saying that there isn't much in the way of connecting traffic. BOS-JFK is a completely different story, however.
