Hooters Air ending service to Rockford

Published November 18, 2005, 2:53 PM CST

ROCKFORD -- Just days after United Airlines announced plans to start flying out of Rockford International Airport, Hooters Air said Friday it is discontinuing all flights there after less than a year.

The Myrtle Beach, S.C.-based carrier said it has given airport officials notice that it will phase out service over the next several weeks. It began flying out of Rockford on Feb. 3 and currently provides nonstop service to Myrtle Beach, Atlanta, Denver, Las Vegas and St. Petersburg/Clearwater, Fla.

I know they just started in my area at AVP and are doing pretty well. They also have started to originate flights at AVP then fly them 50mi to ABE to pick up more passengers. I guess this allows for more profitability. Maybe Rockford wasn't that profitable or there were no options like AVP->ABE-> Florida

This suprises the hell out of me. I figured that the DEN route would get cut, but across the board?

Between UA and Allegiant, they must not see enough of a market left to tap.  Wink

RFD is a great market, but when the airport is giving money to a carrier to compete against one that has lauched big service; its time to go.

Hooters Air to Cancel Service from
the Greater Rockford Airport

Myrtle Beach/ Nov 15 /--Hooters Air will be reducing service and ending service from the Greater Rockford Airport in Rockford, Illinois by January 6, 2006. Following the recent announcement by the Rockford Airport Authority of additional service between Rockford and Denver with $2.5 Million in revenue guarantees from the Rockford Airport the decision has been made to suspend service from Rockford. “We feel we can compete with anyone from a cost stand point,” said President of Hooters Air Mark Peterson. “However, when a Community and Airport provide incentives and revenue guarantees using public funds to a competing carrier over the same route, it makes it impossible to justify continuing that service in this period of record high fuel prices and airport costs.”

Based in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Hooters Air initiated service to Atlanta in March 2003 and now serves 15 markets. Refunds will be made to customers on all affected flights will be refunded through Hooters Air Reservations at 1-888-FLY-HOOT. Hooters Air Flights are Public Charters operated by Pace Airlines. See Tour Participant Agreement for full terms and conditions of travel.

Hooters of America, Inc. is the franchiser and operator of over 400 Hooters restaurants in 46 states and 16 foreign countries. The first Hooters opened in 1983 in Clearwater, Florida. Hooters is well known for its brand of food and fun, featuring a casual beach-theme atmosphere, a menu that features seafood, sandwiches and Hooters’ signature chicken wings, and service provided by the All-American cheerleaders, the Hooters Girls.

Wow, good news followed shortly by bad news. Hooters Air was great for Rockford and its service suited the local vacation population as well. I had the chance to fly Hooters Air in October along with TransMeridian. In the span of a few months both carriers that pioneered RFD-LAS and competed together are leaving. Hopefully Allegiant can take over as they seem to be doing well and are expanding. Also the United service will replace the Hooters Air Denver service. Now what would be great would be to see either Delta or Airtran start RFD-ATL service.

I have to admit I've watched this story unfold with interest.

I've been real surprised there hasn't been more outrage over UAX being given $2.5 million to serve a route that was already being served. After all it wasn't that long ago that UA was upset about Frontier getting a $1 million revenue guarantee to serve Fresno.

And part of the last argument people used was that the guarantee should not include federal funds, but Rockford is using another SCASD grant to partially fund this guarantee for UAX.

So all I can say is hhmmmmm.  confused   scratchchin

If you can read in one of the releases; Hooters Air also said they can make more profitable routes. Could one be Youngstown? A worker of Hooters Air stated this in an email with me: "We have had negotiation with Youngtown however at this time no final decision has been made." And a Airport spokesman confirmed with me last week this was true. So could they be interested in Youngstown? BTW.. The airport has been contacting Travel Agents like a friend of mine who said they were asked if interested in selling golf packages for an airline at the airport. Thanks

This is exactly what AirTran ggot in TLH, SRQ, and GSO and you don't see Delta running away. As a matter of fact, when the money stops, FL is the one to vanish!

It's also exactly what UA wrote to the DOT complaining about with the SCASD program. FAT got a SCASD grant to provide a revenue guarantee to Frontier to operate FAT-DEN. UA then cried foul to the government and the media saying a guarantee shouldn't be given to another airline on an identical route.

I just find it interesting that now that UA got money to serve a route that Hooters already was flying, the same people who thought it was unfair to UA aren't saying this was unfair to Hooters.

I wonder what happens to Hooters' LAS service now. First it was ABE-GYY-LAS. Now I guess it's MYR-RFD-LAS according to what I remember reading on here. Wouldn't mind seeing it AVP-ABE-LAS now.

The routing most recently was ABE-MYR-RFD-LAS. A hell of a long flight on a 757 if you are going from ABE to LAS. Though the service was good. Free hot food in coach and of course those little games that the Hooters Girls play. Hooters was a fun little carrier to fly on, but I am happier with a real carrier like United that has connections to any number of destinations.

I agree. I think Hooters' departure will signal somebody else to enter the market. I don't think Bob O'Brien will let the RFD-ATL market go unnoticed without some courting. If it turns out that Hooters moves the RFD operation to Youngstown, I would be even happier. Youngstown really needs any service they can get, and if Hooters doesn't want the competition, that's the perfect place to go.

Actually, it wasn't a 757 until you got to MYR, I believe. It was a 732 from here to MYR, regardless, alot easier to either pay the little extra money to fly legacies with only one stop in a more hospitable-for-connections airport, or drive out to EWR/PHL for significantly cheaper direct flights.

Thats correct guys the 757 didn't start until MYR but, now hte 757 is completely off the scheduled service part of H1. We have sent it to a contract for Apple vacations, makes much more money there.

The only serivce nonstop out of LAS will be to GYY now. This is on a 737-300. Continuing service to MYR, ABE will continue but it will be via GYY not RFD.

Well I can see Hooters pulling their flights....It was stupid to take down their flights to just one one-way departure on thursdays with no return until Sunday...
I think that I would have liked to have see then Keep Denver and Atlanta and Myrtle Beach. The New United service with "Barbie Jets" will be no where as comfortable as the 737 Hooters flew to Denver. Now the only thing RFD will have for service are two daily flights to DTW, two to DEN and then Allegiant to LAS and SFB.
United needs to drop a 737 or Airbus into Rockford instead of thise pukey little CRJs. The traffic is there, especially if they would be feeding a airport full of possible connections. If Hooters pulled out of the market RFD-DEN it was probably because they didnt have any online connections as United will. All their traffic was O&D. Hopefully the CRJs will be a temporary thing and they will put full size jets on the route.
I would also love to see a AIR TRAN come into Rockford. Forget Delta, theyd also use those God forsaken Brabie Jets too. 50 Seats are not enuff and they can easily over book them and cause pasengers all kinds of problems. Actually, I think that if Southwest poped into Rockford thatd be nice. Otherwise, RFD suffers from too close to Chicago and Milwaukee-itis and will never be any kind of secondary over flow airport. It will always be the Red-Headed Stepchild of airports in the area.

HAHA!!!!!!!! Good luck with that. Long-established UA airports like ABE can't get 737/A319, there's no way brand-new RFD will. Sorry. Not gonna happen.

Yea the 757 can do ABE-LAS especially cause we only carried like 10 people on that route, no jokes aside. ABE-LAS just did not do well for us.

RFD-LAS was great and GYY-LAS is the best!

I am having a very hard time trying to figure out how an airport the size of RFD can come up with revenue guarantees that run in to the millions for service to DTW by NW that doesn't break even, millions for DEN by UA when the surrounding airports such as MSN, MKE, ORD, and MLI already have the UA service, and the money paid out already to Hooter's at a clip of $1.7M If you have to buy the air service and the money runs out, has anyone come out ahead. Either you have the market or you don't but spending millions for failures is not logical!

While the amount of money being put up is astronomical, you should remember the population of Rockford. The Rockford metropolitan area has a population of about 360,000 making it the second biggest metro area in the state of Illinois. It is larger than Bloomington, Springfield, and other airports in the state of Illinois that have commercial air service. So there is demand. There are many travelers and more importantly businesses. There are a number of manufacturing and technical companies that need transportation. The reason that RFD lacks traffic is because it is close to the megalopolis of ORD. But if there are enough operators like UA and NW, then hopefully RFD will get more of the Rockford O/D traffic instead of losing it to ORD.
