NZ Flight Niue/AKL Grounded

Sat Nov 19, 2005 1:57 pm

Just seen on teletext that NZ75 from Niue to AKL has turned back due to mechanical problems. NZ are sending up a 737 tonight to pick up the 70 stranded passengers. Not sure what the problem is, as not at work tonight. Will post a link when I find one.

If I remember correctly this route is to be operated by domestic B733s. Is there any idea yet on what mechanical problems the B733 had?

What do you mean by domestic 733's? Their are those in the fleet not maintained to ETOPS standards. Is this what you mean?

Now NZ1 as the engineer around answer me this, how was NGJ operating to Niue when to my knowledge it is not one of the ETOPS aircraft (FRE, NGD, NGE, NGF, NGG, NGH, NGI). Monitoring the 733 fleet I see SJE and SJC are not being used trans-tasman either. Are they no longer being maintained to ETOPS specs. (onboard SJE a month or so ago I see the life-raft nolonger occupies space in the foward overhead lockers).

Well aren't all the 733's in the NZ fleet configured for domestic service now (IE no business class and a little less leg room when compared to the A320)? Of course when flying overseas with ETOPS restrictions, they'll have the extra safety equipment on board (life rafts in overheads etc) as with flights to Norfolk I.

I don't know if the domestic configuaration B733s are certified for ETOPS

Well how long is it from AKL to Niue? Because it would not be that much longer than AKL to Norfolk Island wihich is about 2 hours. Also they use 733 services from AKL-NAN-RAR still so there would be some NZ 733's with ETOPS still.

According to NZs web-site these are the flight times operated by B733s

AKL-NLK is 1 hour 45mins
AKL-IUE (Niue) is 3 hours 35 mins
AKL-NAN is 3 hours 15 mins
NAN-RAR is 3 hours 15mins

They all have the same configuration, 136Y. Some of them remain ETOPS certified. NGJ isn't to my knowledge hence my question to NZ1.

I know all the B733s now have the same configuration, but not sure about ETOPS on the 733s

Right. Firstly ZK-NGJ is ETOPS certified. The entire fleet is maintained to the same ETOPS standard even though not all aircraft fly or can fly ETOPS flights. It makes it easier on Mx scheduling to have all aircraft maintained alike. NGK,M,N and O do not have the necessary Nav systems etc fitted to enable them to operate ETOPS flights, though like I just mentioned, they are still maintained to the same standard as the rest of the fleet.

FDM, SJC, and SJE are leaving in the 1st half of 2006, just for info.
