US Airways PHL-MUC Stopped At Gander Today - Why?

According to MUC Airport, US Airways flight 014 Philadelphia-Munich operated via Gander today, arriving more than two hours late at 12.40. Any info what happened?

According to US Airways website, it was a medical divert:

Comments: This flight was scheduled to operate from Miami Interntnl, FL to Philadelphia, PA to Munich, GERMANY. It has been rerouted to Gander Nf, CANADA. The flight is operating behind schedule because of immediate medical needs of a customer onboard. For information about your party please contact US Airways Reservations at (800) 428-4322.This flight arrived in Munich, GERMANY at 12:46pm.

It's always a bit misleading to me the way US lists Flights as originating in city1 and transiting through PHL to Europe as a single flight number. The flight in question left Miami as a 757, arrived in PHL 3 hours before the departure of the same flight # (as scheduled) , which was a 767. I wonder how many of the PHL-MIA passengers were really on the PHL-MUC aircraft. It's probably just a marketing strategy to give the illusion of greater direct domestic - international coverage. They do the same thing on several West Coast - Europe flights.

I don't this is a US-only flight numbering scheme. For instance, UA flights 895 and 896 from PHL, through ORD to HKG go from raddy old 737's to 744's on to Asia.

The feeder flights for the HKG and NRT departures from ORD ex-PHL have almost always been 75's lately; and having flown them several times the last few weeks it sure seems as if they have had a high volume of pax continuing on.

I once was on a UA 320 from LGA-ORD that was continuing on to NRT (obviously not the same plane).

They also tell you the flight is "direct". How flying on one plane to an airport you aren't interested in going to and switching you onto another plane to take you to your final destination can be marketed as "direct" has always seemed dishonest to me. I don't care if airline lingo says its true or not because the reality is that there is no difference between a "direct" or "connecting" flight when "direct" is so loosely applied. "Direct" should be the shortest route between two points and everything else should be "indirect".

Likewise I have never understood this absurd marketing ploy. However... there is one advantage: when you upgrade. I upgraded my wife HKG-JFK on UA, one flight number, but with plane change (744 to 744) at NRT. She flew C-class all the way, as one single upgrade voucher. Not bad...

When you have as much experience with "delays and cancellations" as US does, you should that good at explaining it....practice makes perfect.  spin
