I wonder what was wrong with just using the 727 "as is"?

I think the idea was that Mr Hadden built all his own things - I don't think it was supposed to be a basic 727 in the movie, but something different...

yup. These days a movie without computer effects doesn't get a decent ranking from the reviewers.
You don't even have to see it, but you need the term in the titles or the punters won't like it.

Do all 727's have stairs in the rear fuselage or is it only a select few? I saw on The Apprentice the 1st series, 'The Donald' was talking about how he got his plane and he was standing by the stairs at the back. Is it just VIP ones because that sure does look like a private jet.

All of them ... Just like the DC9/MD80s series ...

The very first aircraft to have stairs in the rear fuselage was ... the SE-210 Caravelle, built in 1955 ...

First jetliner perhaps, but the propliner Martin 202/404 series, which first flew
in 1946, was equipped with rear stairs.

Also, the Convair 240 had rear/ventral airstairs.

You have to love Hollywood... My favorite plane from Contact is the AV-8B looking transport they fly on when they land at the second machine thingie.. I would love to ride in a vertical take off and landing aircraft... Ohh Ohh maybe Northwest will buy some and use them as replacements for their DC-9's  duck

Interestingly... I've seen pictures of 727s used as engine test platforms with a fourth engine. Unfortunatly, I can't remember much more about it.

Initially yes. Maybe some later models were created without and a lot of them had the stairs removed at a later date after one guy used them to leave a hijacked 727 in mid flight (apparently they could be opened in flight) using a parachute.

They weren't removed. They just had a lock put on them that didn't allow them to be opened while the cabin was pressurized.

I believe all 727s had them, except maybe the F. Anyone know if later 727-200Advanced were available without stairs?

I do not think "all" MD80s have them, do they?

If anyone has a shot of the inside of the plane. I think the cabin windows are also a different shape - more Russian looking than anything you'd find on a 727.

This might be off topic but here it goes. How about the movie Flightplan's job with remakeing the A380 the bomb in the end looked fake it all blew out of the bottom of the plane the whole front of the plane should have blown up too oh well.

Supposing that is an actual 727. It looks like a -100 series, but with 5 727 engines, what do we think the range would be? maybe, maaaybe 1000 nm? Mostly kidding, but it would be neat to see one of those flying around. The movie also shows the most amazing interior I've ever seen for a VIP jet.

All of the DC-9's did not have ventral stairs. The -10's did not have them except for one that I know of that YX used to fly. I heard it was the only one made like that.

I do think all the MD-80's have them though. They are gone on the 717.

Ugh... and I thought we'd finally get to know what the offspring of a VC-10 and a 727 looks like.

I didn't think the 717 had them, but I thought later MD-80s didn't have them. All AA seatplans have a hallway for the rear stair.

What about the MD-88 or 90 series? They came many years later, when airstairs were not used for boarding anymore. Did they save the weight at take them out?

And kids, this is what happens when a 727 and a IL-62 have sex.

That airplane in the movie is the result.
