Consecutive Go-arounds At LHR

Tue Nov 22, 2005 12:40 am

I was at the Hatton Cross station watching airplanes land at rw 27L, and at 5.45pm, Fri, Nov 18, an Iberia A321 landed then an Aer Lingus A321 (with no landing lights on) went around, followed by a British Airways A319. After this, a couple of airplanes landed on 27R and then the 27L landings resumed. Any idea what, if anything, happened?

PS. Those A32Xs are slow taking off but they during the go-around, they shot up like rockets!!!

The main reason for go-arounds at LHR is to do with aircraft being too slow to vacate the runway, hence aircraft on final approach need to go around again. It's not unsusual for ATC to switch landings momentarily to let aircraft land. On this occasion it could be something else.

Slow runway vacation is one thing but having 2 airplanes go around and another 2 land on a different runway? That must have been the slowest runway vacation ever.

Maybe they had to check the runway for debris.
Don't they have to check the runway every few hours ?
So far in 2008 45 flights and Gold already. JFK, IAD, LGA, SIN, HKG, NRT, AKL, PPT, LAX still to book ! Home Airport LCY

It could be that aswell, runway inspections are mandatory at every interval by the airfield operations manager.

Routine runway inspections are done amongst the arriving traffic, you just drive a few hundred metres of the runway at a time then get out of there when the tower says before the next aircraft is cleared to land!

Perhaps the most likely thing is a burst tyre on the IB 321. In the event of a burst tyre you will get go-arounds as the entire length of the runway the aircraft used must be immediately checked for debris before any other aircraft can use it.
Once you have tasted flight, you will walk the earth with your eyes turned forever skyward

The arrivals for the runway in use can be all stopped for things such as a Bird Strike, purely for fact that there could be a piece of fried bird on the Runway or a mechanical object due to the bird strike that could affect the safety of incoming arrivals.
