How Many Airlines Still Use Tail Logo Lights?

Wed Nov 23, 2005 4:36 am

I was wondering if there are any airlines still using the tail logo lights. I heard that they were invented by a TWA mechanic in MCI and I know that they were used at TWA until the AA (dis)integration, thats when they disconnected them. I always thought that they looked great. Do any airlines still use them?

Japan Airlines is using them for sure. But it really depends on who's the captain; not all turn their 'logo light' on Big grin

Southwest uses them on the -700's, only because the 300's and 500's aren't equipped with them.

Tis funny cause when I see American Eagle, they usually always have their tail lights on.. but when I watch American mainline, they usually don't. At least at RDU. Go figure..

Here in TXL most airliners use them. However, here it's worth it since it's over a city. Perhaps they are less popular on remote airports.

Just that...to show off your logo. Remember the best billboard for a lot of airlines are their airplanes. Nothing like looking up and seeing a logo to know an airline flies to your city...

I would think that they make the aircraft more visible when taxiing as well as being a great advertising tool. I know that here in STL, I never see an AA mainline aircraft with them lit.

I think in alot of cases where they haven't been disabled for MX reasons (i.e. to save on the cost of replacing the lamps) it's pilot's discretion, or at least that's what it seems like.

I've also heard that (at least historically) if the pilots are disgruntled with the airline they work for (say, contentious contract negotiations) they're much more apt to 'forget' to turn them on (and therefore, to deprive the airline of that bit of advertising without putting anyone at risk)

Think it's mostly up to the pilots. GQ's 1900Ds have them, but our tails are just plain blue so there really isn't a reason to turn them on. Some pilots do, and some don't...

Alaska Airlines:

Only on the NG 737's (700/800/900)

The MD80's/734 are not equiped

Thought a side note. N786AS (The Icelantic Princess) which we bought from Icelandair does have the logo lights on the end of the wing, but are not activated.

DL hardly ever used them, I really never saw DL aircraft ever use the logos when I worked for them, but some 767-332ER would have them on. Kinda looked dull with all dark DL tails.

some use tail logo lights from the wing tip, while some have them inside the elevators, or tail engine pylons

That's what I had read a while back on this forum. AA apparently doesn't even have bulbs in them to a) save weight and b) save money on powering/replacing them. Probably a tiny drop in the bucket but I guess every drop counts towards getting back into profitability.

F9 has them so you can see what animal the a/c has on it. This is both on the tail and the wing tips so the pax can be reminded which animal is on the tail. Kinda cool if you ask me.

I have heard aircraft have the lights on to help ATC at busy airports. I suppose in some ways if your in the tower looking out it makes life a bit easier to identify aircraft quicker. FR use them and i'm sure if they had a choice they wouldn't.

I think that tail logo lights are installed on series and not optional, use is then on the discretion of the PF or under instructions from the airline.

What is the tech term used for this light and where is the switch located in most aircraft? Is turning this on and off on a preflight check and or a prelanding checklist?

I've never heard the AA livery described as ugly, but everyone is entitled to their opinion.

The tail light is non essential for dispatch, so there would be no immediate need to change the lights if and when they burn out.

On the 320 and DC9, there is a switch on the overhead panel. I flew in simulators of both type and they were there. The 320 listed it as a logo light. I don't recall on the DC9.

I don't remember it being on the checklist. I don't think it has to be there, as its not a required light.

On the 737-300/500/700/800/900 that I fly, the logo light switch is in the same position as this picture shows. (overhead panel, lower right) it is labeled LOGO. On our aircraft there is a switch to the immediate left of the LOGO switch and that is for the sterile light.

I saw an HF A310 landing in FRA at night a view weeks ago. HF uses logo lights. The blue tails of the TUI-Group look great when lightened! - Nicer than the orange ones that HF had years ago.
