Why Are Thai Airways Airfares Soo Expensive?

Wed Nov 23, 2005 6:39 am

I flew with Thai Airways in July/August from Auckland to Bangkok rtn. It was certainly the cheapest airfare.

I had the impression that a lot of backpackers or people wanting cheap airfares (but fantastic service) were flying Thai Airways all over the world.

I recently searched flights for next year AKL-BKK and I couldn't find anything under around $6000 return. I searched the latest I could next year and the same airfare was shown. It seems the same when you make bookings from Australia to BKK. Anything departing before 2006 is around $2000.

Why are their airfares soo expensive? They've just started their A346 service to AKL, this certainly won't fill such a large aircraft.

I've been looking forward to flying with Thai because they have such amazing service and especially flying on their A346, but looks like that's far from happening now.

TG has traditionally been the last carrier to fill up ex Australia/NZ- their fares do tend to be a bit on the high side compared to others. However, where are you looking for prices- you need to see the price in a Flight Centre for example, not the ridiculous fares that appear on the airline's web site.

Did you get these fares online, or through an agent? In my experience, Thai relies on wholesalers to distribute their tickets, though they sometimes offer cheap published fares as well. Another possibility is that you were searching dates with very limited availability (and therefore higher fares).

Oh, I've been looking on their website. I didn't find any cheap fares on airfare websites such as Zuji. It seems strange that earlier this year I could find fares on their website AKL-BKK-AKL for less than $2000, but now I search start, middle, end of next year and their website displays those rediculous airfares.

I'm heading into Flight Centre today, so I'll see what they have.

Cheers, Tim

your namesake airline usually releases its consolidation fares about twice a year - I suspect that you are looking for a date after 31MAR06 ??? As bizarre as it may sound some of the Asian carriers only have extortionate published levels until they release their consolidation fares ( it used to be the bane of my life as a travel agent ) I agree with the previous poster - check with FC - but from previous experience TG are often very last minute in re-releasing their fares so I wouldn't be surprised if you had to wait until April to get the levels for late 2006 ( KE are often even worse , they sometimes let the fares expire altogether and have nothing in the market place for a week or two )

I saw $1599 fares to Europe, $799 to BKK on TG fares only about 2 weeks ago. With High season it goes up by about $400 from memory.

Go to a bucket shop or consolidator to see what bulk discounts on TG are left, but you might end up with MH/CI/JL etc when they sell out. but from my experience, TG hardly has good fares through travel agents in the US to BKK.
they have a sloppy fare base structure.

when I am stuck with buying a revenue ticket, I always go to a consolidator and take whatever deal is left regardless of carrier. Usually end up with CI/JL
on my Trans-Pacific flights.

I just love the way the ARC ticket issued to me has the full fare printed on it
despite I paid almost like 75% off the fare listed on my ARC ticket coupons.
makes it feel like its a staff ticket hehe sort of and confirmed.
