JetBlue To Now Offer Online Bag Check

Wed Nov 23, 2005 8:04 am

Yet another way to make travelling easier and enjoyable for our customers! Now any customer departing from a U.S. city will be able to check their bags online and just drop them off at the ticket counter or other assigned areas.

NEW YORK, (Nov. 22, 2005) - JetBlue Airways Corp. (Nasdaq: JBLU) today introduces online bag check in, available at all of the low-fare airline’s U.S. locations. Customers may check up to two bags in online, and bag tag numbers will automatically print on the boarding passes. Customers can drop off their bags at any of JetBlue’s Self Service/Bag Drop or Kiosk/Online Bag Drop counter at the airport(1). Additionally, JetBlue customers traveling out of John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York have an exclusive Online Bag Drop area along the departures roadway.

This new online service compliments JetBlue’s online flight check in for customers through its website at www.jetblue.com. Customers can select their seat assignments and print their boarding documents from home (or office), and proceed directly to the security check point with online check in. Customers may check in online no less than 90 minutes prior to departure, and no more than 24 hours prior to departure. With the added online bag check in option, nearly all JetBlue customers will be able to save time by checking themselves and their bags in online.

To celebrate this new online service, JetBlue’s TrueBlue® members will earn two bonus points for checking in online at www.jetblue.com, now through Jan. 5, 2006.

“Our on-line check-in options and dedicated JFK on-line bag drop area are just two examples how we continue to make the JetBlue Experience as simple and convenient as possible for our customers,” said Andrea Spiegel, JetBlue’s vice president of Sales and Marketing. “These time-saving options are particularly important during the busy Thanksgiving and holiday seasons.”

This sounds great and will make things much easier. Now much more people can check in online, so the check in area will be less hectic during the day. It is all around a great move.

Great for customers (saves time, more convenient), and great for the company (less labor needs, less paper and ink costs).

An all around win-win.

Do other airlines offer such an option?

When they say bag tag numbers, do they mean the whole long strip that the airlines normally put on the handle of a bag? On CO at least, the thing is usually at least 20 inches long. How would they print that on a regular piece of paper? Also, how would they ensure that the tags stay on the bag? On the things that they print out at the airport, they are fastened together with an adhesive backing. Considering how rough the baggage systems are, I would be leery that a home tape-job of computer paper would remain on the bag through the whole process.

This was in another post about FL and I still don't quite understand how this works. So it prints your bag tag numbers at your home computer...big deal. You're still required to stand in line at the airport to hand over your bag, I would assume the bag still needs to be tagged with an actual bag tag, and you'd still need to show your ID for all bags checked. Am I missing something? Is the dedicated bag check line the only time saver?

The bag tag number prints on the boarding pass. The actual bag tag doesn't print. It's important to have the bag tag number on your boarding pass so that if it's lost or something then the CSA can locate it more easily. The actual tag needs to be obtained at the airport though.

So then what's the advantage if you still need to go to the counter to have the actual tag printed?

Before this feature you could only have checked in online if you had a carry-on. However, you can now check-in online if you have luggage too. The advantage is that when you go to the counter it only takes a minute to give the bag and have the label printed.

At least I think this is how it works...not sure what happens behind the scenes but JetBlue seems to have these types of things very organized.

Don't know if it's the same - but United has something similiar at IAD. You can check in at the airport via the automated kiosk and when you tell it how many bags you want to check in - it automatically spits out the bag tag. A United employee or 2 mills around behind the counter to apply the tag and then toss your bag on the belt. It is fabulous and quick. I always check-in from home and then "check-in" again if I need to check a bag.

I don't know how it will work with JetBlue.

Yes and you don't need to stand in line forever because they have special designated areas for this where you walk up and drop the bag off, make sure the tag is on and head to the gates.

Same thing for CO @ EWR - they have a line specified "continental.com Bag Drop", and it moves much faster than the regular line.

Oh...so it's basically what British Airways has been offering for three years? Or am I missing something? With BA you check-in online and then go to the fast bag drop-off lane and get your bags printed. Takes 30 seconds.

So its something that DL already does.

You check in at home, come to the airport, take your at home printed boarding card and scan it at the kiosk where there are never any lines, and your reservation pops up advising you that you are checked in and how many bags will you be checking. You pick how many bags you have and the tags print out. A DL person or "bag tagger" behind the kiosk checks your bag, hands you to the claim stubs, and your on your way.

Sounds good but more work at the airport. For this you walk in drop it down, say your name make sure its all good and your gone within about 15 seconds. DL does have a good system though.
NK has the little choice of how many bags you are checking at their electronic check in machines at the airports. It is pretty good but not as easy as this.
