Will 'Lauda Air' Be Gone Forever Eventually?

Wed Nov 23, 2005 11:09 pm

Does Lauda Air's brand name still exist? If yes, will it be gone 100% soon/eventually?

I suppose they have already changed/will change everything to Austrian Airlines right?

my understanding is that Austrian will keep the Lauda brand for some routes which it sees as predominantly leisure markets - while the Austrian brand will be used on the more 'prestigious' routes .

I wouldn't worry too much about that. For the time being, the Lauda Air name will remain and will still be marketed as "Austrian" flights. Tyrolean was changed to Austrian (Arrows) for obvious reasons, but too many people associate Lauda with a certain type of service - namely the leisure market - so for the time being it's not going to disappear.

Ultimately though, yes you will most probably see it disappear.

What about international routes? I suppose Lauda's brandname will cease in the international market right?

Niki Lauda started the succesful Airline after his big Formula 1 period. His name is a brand in itself. The Lauda brand is Austrian now but he did it again with the other part of his name:

What about flights to KUL and SYD? From what I see they are all flown by Austrian flights right?

I have flown with Lauda Air to Malta on a scheduled flight and let me tell you that the standard of service is by far superior to that of OS. The inflight catering was extraordinary. The presentation was super. The inflight entertainement was great. All in all, a super experience compared to the poor OS service. I hope Lauda will not disappear!
But I think that intercontinental flights will be handed over to OS.

Yep... Austrian serves the scheduled and business markets, Lauda (still marketed as Austrian though) serves the charter and leisure markets. Austrian Arrows serves the regional market only, with it's small jets and turboprops.

When I worked at Austrian there was a VERY fine line that defined what was a charter flight and what was a scheduled flight. Off the top of my head, I remember Lisbon and Dublin were "advertised" as charter flights, had charter flight numbers, but in their nature were no different from a scheduled service. This always caused confusion... at the end of the day, it's irrelevant though  Smile

yes , VIE-KUL-SYD and VIE-SIN-MEL have been re-branded as Austrian and operate with former NG aircraft some of which have already been repainted into OS colours - the others will follow.

Maybe you just had a bad experience or are making an unfair comparison. I mostly fly AUA only, and feel that it's exactly the opposite. I am sure many people will agree with me on this matter.

What aircraft and what routes are you making this kind of comparison for?  scratchchin

Can they pick up passengers at KUL and fly them to SYD on the KUL-SYD route? Also can they pick passengers from SYD and fly them to KUL and let them off? I suppose it's a 5th freedom flight eight?

Yep, that's exactly what they do. A certain proportion of passengers get off/on at the intermediate stops.

That's not what I meant... I mean... if you are going to compare an Austrian flight from VIE-AMM on an A320 for example, you'd have to use a flight like VIE-LIS on a B737 to make a fair comparison. You can't compare say a flight from VIE-BEG to a flight from VIE-KUL. Again, I don't know what legs you flew but they both have different aircraft and different routes. A CRJ is not equipped with the same IFE a B777 is equipped with. The meal service on a <90 minute flight on AUA can't be compared to a meal service on a medium to long-haul flight on LDA, and so on. If you are going to compare, then you have to be fair.

If this was still the case and you're not happy, then fair enough. I still find AUA better than LDA and am happy that the routes I fly since the past 2 years are not Lauda flights. I must say I am not feeling like I'm missing out on any fun!

So I have flown VIE-CDG (2 hours) on OS and VIE-MLA on NG (2 hours and 15 minutes). The NG service is way above that of OS.

How much did Niki Lauda sell his airline for?

Well I haven't noticed if anyone posted on the Lauda Italy airline he had. I know it has been sold to Livingston but they still have half and half fleet. I flew for this airline back in the winter of 2003. We were on a Wet Lease that was amazing. The service on the plane was amazing. I worked in Amadeaus Class for the full 17 day pairing. Just insane the amount of service that had to be done up there. But it was great doing it. The choices of food if I recall were Beef a l'orange, Peking Chicken, Red Snapper. All served on China plates with Crystal glasses. All of which were amazing. And all of it had to be dressed a certain way from a book. Just amazing. Back in the economy section the service was just as good. All the hot entrees were served with China dishes all sterling silverware. a choice between a Beef dish or a Pasta dish, and the just prior to decent was a HUGE boxed lunch with all sorts of deli meats in there, Cheese you had soo much to chooze from, fruits, salads, It was crazy, some airlines in north Ameirca should take some notes from this airline. WOW. Hope that the style of service they do, Livingston has kept it up.

Ha funny you asked that. cause when I was working there I asked the same thing. found it funny to be chicken instead of Duck. I was told by the catering company that the airline runs as well that Chicken was cheaper, But DAMN it was Amazing!! All the food was. I think I gained a little weight that 17 days.
