The A380 doesn't require as many changes in airports as most people think...

To the best of my knowledge, most changes to allow the A380 to operate are relatively small. More major changes can be helpful to the operators.

The A380 can operate from any runway the 747 can, and can use most taxiways (some minor fillets need to be added at many airports).

Most widebody gates fit the A380, but there may be clearence issues with adjacent aircraft. Specialized gates could dramatically reduce boarding time.

Obviously a bigger plane needs a bigger hangar, and some bridges will need to be strengthened or made off limits to A380s.

Some airports will definately have to do all the above especially bridges. I read an article a while ago whereby LAS airport officials stated that they are not even sure the whalejet can land @ LAS as an emergency alternative because the bridges cannot hold up the weight.

I believe most airports that the whalejet will be flying to are already working on taxiways and runways especially the separation btwn the two coz of the whalejet's wingspan. Not too sure about hangars tho'.
If you are going through hell, keep going.

That is probably true for Landing & Taxi, until something goes wrong such as miss the last taxiway. In some cases will need the tug to "back & fill" it out, and consequently be a nuisance to other traffic.

Also need to consider general airport facilities, such as parking, customs, checkin, baggage collection etc etc.

Another consideration is FOI by the outer engines, which wikk overhang the runway at many airpoprts.

These aren't showstoppers, and mean that there should be plenty of airports available as alternates, but a lot of airports need to spend a lot of money, to see the 380 on a regular basis.

In reality, I guess, the regularity will dictate the level of investment.

Wouldnt that really only preclude landing on the 25/7 runways? And the D Concourse? Granted, the D concourse is probably the only place you could dock an A380 since all the other gates are really setup for narrowbody (757/737/32x) jets. Maybe the international terminal as well..

With worldwide air passengers predicted to double by 2020, many airports will need to construct additional parking spaces, check-in desks, etc. anyway. It doesn't matter if those additional passengers will fly on an A380 or a 787. A passenger flying on a 787 cannot park in a smaller parking place than a passenger with a ticket for an A380!

Required improvements at Melbourne are estimated at $A50M. Sydney is initially spending $A46M. on operational needs, I believe the total budget (i.e, including extra terminal space and car parking) is over $A100M.
