Total # Of Airline Employees - Each Airline?

Fri Nov 25, 2005 8:29 pm

I want to know current total number of employees for each airline. Can anyone provide a list here? I was curious which airline has most employees and which major airline has fewest employees. I believe American Airlines (and American Eagle) has about 100,000 employees?

Qantas fact file on the QF web site says they employ approximately 38,000 people.

Aer Lingus average number of employees for 2004 was 3,906.

Trent.

These figures can be very misleading.

Airlines differ greatly in the degree of "contracting out " of services provided, with in general the legacy carriers (still) doing a lot of things in house though less than before, and the LCC's having most functions sub contracted out.

Check in, Maintenance, Catering, Flight Services, Ground Handling, in the numbers or out?

Southwest's website says "more than 31,000," which I believe is a 2004 estimate. I would guess the number is more like 35,000 employees now.
Keepin' it real.

B6 numbers are more like "9500" and each day the company adds an average of 9 employees per day. *this is according to an email sent yesterday by management.

Funny you should ask...

The Ever-Shrinking Airline Employee Universe

As if you needed hard and fast proof that the airline employee is becoming an endangered species, the Department of Transportation gave us cold hard numbers last week to support what you and I both know -- the airline employee is a vanishing breed.

As you can see by these charts that track the number of FTEs, or full-time employees, the number of employees employed by the big eight carriers in 2001 was almost 420,000. Fast forward to 2005, and that number has shrunk to 275,000.

Ah, but there is all that hiring going on with the low-cost carriers, some might say.

No, there has not been that much hiring going on with the low-cost carriers.
A look at the second chart shows us that for the same time period, the eight largest low-cost carriers only added about 10,000 employees during the same period of time.

Net-net, the industry is now about 150,000 employees smaller than it was four years ago.

BA had 46,112 average MPEs (Manpower Equivalent - the number of employees adjusted for part time workers and overtime) for the period I April to 30 September 2005. But if you just count heads you probably get a different number.

Wow! That is a brutal reduction compared to pre 9/11.  Sad But its good to see the company growing again. My friends that used to fly UA seem to all be back flying UA (I know, un-scientific...)

Does anyone have a list of full time equivalent (FTE's) per available seat mile?

Thanks for the info EA CO AS.

Is B6 already that much more than FL?!? Does FL outsource more?

South African Airways, from http://www.flysaa.com

Employs close to 12 000 people worldwide, including 3 600 at SAA Technical. Staff include about 2 800 flight attendants and more than 800 pilots.

It'd be interesting to find out how many employees per aircraft a company has. I'm sure it varies quite a bit, based upon aircraft sizes, service levels, etc.

Last heard DL had 51,000 employees, NW had 36,000 and US had 26,000. CO had something like 32,000 and AA was around 80,000. Those numbers above are high accept for F9, FL, B6, and WN, whose numbers have all likely increased.

No wonder TZ is in so much trouble. Almost 7,000 employee's with the number of flights they have. Ouch!

One thing that Frontier is keeping quiet is how they believe that the Airbus doesn't need maintance, and are reducing the number of mechanics. We are hiring more pilots, flight attendants , and management.
