B-747 In Buenos Aires

I had the chance to visit Buenos Aires a couple of times lately (EZE). Arriving early in the morning from Europe I realized that most of the B-747 I used to see before are now gone (I would say the only exception is Aerolíneas Argentinas). Former 747 flights have turned into A-340: (Lufthansa and Iberia) or B-777 (Air France). I don't know if British Airways is still flying the 747.
Could any shortly explain to me why the jumbo jet no longer is the preferred aircraft for these routes? My experience is that flights mostly depart with full passenger load. Do not 50-70 more occupied seats compensate for the higher fuel consumption (if that is the issue)?

For sure you still have Malaysian 744 service to EZE.

By the way why did SA quit EZE - They used to take 742 and 747SP to EZE?

I'm afraid to tell you, you are wrong with most of the data you give here. I don't know when you last visited Ezeiza, but things are completely different than you picture them.

SAA left EZE for a code-share agreement with Varig on the GRU-EZE leg. The Argentina-South Africa market is not very big, and they were facing competition with Malaysia, which usually offers very cheap fares (EZE-CPT = 500 USD last summer!).

LH was one of the first airlines to offer nonstop flights from EZE to Europe in the early 90's with the introduction of the 747-400.
The first commercial flight of LH A346 was from FRA to EZE.
Now Lufthansa flies the 744 on the route.

BA was using the 777, now the 744.

AF switch from the 744 to the 777.

AZ flies the 777.

And IB the good old 747-200 or the A346.

Boeing 747 operators in the past/present to EZE:

Alitalia
Pan American
KLM
British Airways
Lufthansa
Air France
Iberia
SAA
Malaysian
Qantas
Southern Winds
Aeroposta ( charter, flying the first 747 delivered to PA)
Aerolineas Argentinas
Varig

That's all I can remember.

During 2002-2003 most of the 747 disappear from EZE , except AR and MH.That was the period that LH used the 346 non-stop, BA the 777 and IB 343-346.

I was wondering when is LH going to resume nonstop flights FRA-EZE. I heard that LH GRU-SCL leg on the A346 have very poor loads, but I don´t know about GRU-EZE leg. Considering they send a B744, I believe that could be a possibility to send a A343 (range issues?) or a A346 nonstop, if not daily, at least something like 5x a week. Germany is one of the strongest international markets for Brazil, and so one would think Argentina deserves at least a nonstop flight, specially with only one carrier flying directly.

For the 747s in EZE, what about Air Plus Comet? Is it still flying?

I did not know Air Plus Comet 742 and Aerolineas del Sur 742 served EZE in the past? What routings? and year/decade of service?

I apologize.

I left Buenos Aires last Saturday a week ago after a two-weeks visit (I traveled on an IB A-346, as I did twice in 2004). And I traveled in May on an AF 777.

I didn't see any B-747 apart from those of Aerolineas. I sure jumped into a wrong conclusion.

I am happy to know that the Jumbo Jet is still in use. I am very fond of that aircraft even if I prefer the comfort of the B777 and the A346 compared to the old birds Iberia and Aerolíneas were flying, at least for a couple of years ago.

I didn't know LH had switched back to the B747. I stop flying with them when they cancelled the non-stop flight.

I definitely can vouch for seeing LH,AR,BA,MH at EZE. in the past month
Flown to 120 Airports in 44 Countries on 73 Operators. Visited 55 Countries and counting. Wanderlust is like Syphilis, once you have the itch it's too late for treatment.

I flew to EZE from NYC in October and when we landed, we parked right next to a LH 747-400. It had arrived from FRA from either GRU or nonstop and was either headed back to GRU or on to SCL.

MH flies several times a week from EZE with 744.

Iberia switched to the A340-300/600s because they are fazing the B747-200/300/400s out of their fleet. When the A340 started to show up at EZE back in 2003 Iberia currently had a fleet of 5 B747-200s and 2 B747-300s. During 2003/2004 EC-DNP, EC-HVD, and EC-IAF where fazed out of the fleet leaving EC-DIA, EC-DIB, TF-ATI, and TF-ATJ.

When the A340 started flying to EZE the B747 focus was shifted more to North America serving MIA, JFK, ORD, SJU, HAV, and SDQ until recently sometime in 2004 when all US operations except for MIA, SJU, HAV, and SDQ where being flown by the A340-300/600 and MIA, SJU, HAV, and SDQ remained the B747-200/300/400 until very recently + the A340-300/600s. (HAV is still being flown by the B747-400s)

As for other B747s serving EZE I can only vouch for Aerolineas Argentinas and Air Plus Comet and the recently deased Southern Winds since I have seen the three B747-200/400s leaving MAD numerous times with a destination of EZE.
