Would The A358 Fit Into DL Longhaul Operations?

Sat Nov 26, 2005 6:03 am

First, I´m going to admit that a A350 purchase by DL is unlikely, but I intend this thread to be about their longhaul route structure and of course, the aircraft required for their network.

DL has a lot of 763s which need a replacement in the future, and the A358 won´t be much bigger, yet, it has a very long range of 16300 km which would allow DL to start many new Asian and maybe South African destinations nonstop from ATL. Some of the European routes need growth which is likely to be carried out by using the 764, but with the A358 these aircraft could stay on domestic routes.

Any thoughts ?
Exceptions confirm the rule.

The A358 fits just as much as the 787 does--which is a foregone conclusion.

The 787-3 and 787-8 fit into the fleet better.

DL is Boeing, Boeing, Boeing. I don't see that changing anytime soon.

The 787-900 is the same size as the A358, and it has similar range.

The 787 would just fit overall better in the DL fleet, also bc of the 783 which Dl could use for Domestic and Hawaii services.

As for delta not buying airbus, that's a problem, and so I don't think they will ever buy any 350.

But the real question is: Is there any airline which flies longhaul who isn't/won't consider/buy the 350 or 787?

Couldn't have said it better, DL will eventually go for the 787 as the Airbus doesn't make much sense being an oddball in the fleet if they would order it.

Would the A358 cover operations currently handled by 763ER and 764ER equipment? Sure.

And the A359 would cover operations currently handled by the 772ER.

But as noted above, DL is a Boeing operator and will choose the 787 family when it comes time to replace their 763/764 fleet and the 773ER/772LR when they need more range and capacity then their 772ERs offer. And should Boeing launch a 787-9HGW and/or 787-10, those will be the frames of choice to replace the 772ERs.

DL will order the A358 when IB orders the 777-300ER...It just simply doesn't make much sense when the carrier has decided to go Boeing and they've been put on a 20+ yr plan with them. Plus DL is very happy with their 763's and I see them putting their trust in Boeing once again when it comes time to replace these birds. Didn't see the A310's have that success with them.

Well the A358 would be a suitable aircraft for the routes that 764s fly. However, the A350 family doesn't offer anything that would be a good one-for-one 762/ER or 763/ER replacement for domestic and long haul. If Delta survives (and doesn't merge with someone else), and if Boeing makes a 787-10, I would think that the 787 family could become the sole widebody in the Delta fleet.

Actually, the A358 would only be suitable on the international routes that the 767-400ERs will fly. It would not be suitable as a domestic 767-400ER replacement as they would have to use Concourse E at ATL. I believe that most of the domestic 767-400ERs land in Concourse T. I think that Delta would order the 787-3 for domestic routes to replace the 767-200, and the 787-8 for international routes to supplement the 767-300ERs.

Apart from any Airbus against Boeing discusion: How was Delta satisfied or unsatisfied with the ex Pan Am A310s ? Did they leave the fleet just because of commonality issues or were these aircrafts known as "Hangar Queens" ?

So surely any sales pitch to DL by Boeing would be quite easy and they could probably get the list price for the aircraft, as it is common knowledge that DL will only go for Boeing?
