Mon May 22, 2000 11:06 am

What is the longest scheduled non-stop flight operating today?? With what equipment- Same question for past and known future plans?

Thanks,

If distance (rather than time enroute) is the criterion, ATL-JNB is longest by several hundred miles-- assuming it actually exists. The OAG says it's nonstop, but who knows?

Besides ATL-JNB, other close followers are LAX-MEL and ORD-HKG. Apparently the United States is the farthest away country from all the others seeing how the top 3 start in the US!

I may be a moron but since I do all my flying in the midwest USA, where the heck is JNB?

Thanks!

I would think that only longest route is only one-way because of tailwind save fuel from Atlanta to Cape Town, SA is 8,130 miles on South Africa Airways of the 747-400. They can't use westbound only one stop somewhere I can't find where they stop at. The other way, UAL has round trip longest route btwn ORD-HKG on 747-400 with 7,782 miles.

Hope it helps you some information.

On the JNB-ATL service they stop at a place called Sal Island (code SID). I have no idea where this is however.

Shouldn't DTW to Beijing or Shanghai on NW be longer than ORD-HKG?

ORD-HKG In Time

Mon May 22, 2000 12:38 pm

ORD-HKG is over 15 hours long, in the 2000 Guiness Book of World records as the longest NON-STOP flight (the aircraft is a 747-400 of United)
life wasn't worth the balance, or the crumpled paper it was written on

While we're on the ORD-HKG subject, an AA 777 has recently flown the route. It was the first twinjet to fly a trans-polar route. Apparently, the trip is a longer distance this way, but the winds are more favorable, making for a shorter journey time. Sorry, this is all I could remember. I read the article in the current Airliner World, which is in my locker at work, so I can't refer to it.

BTW, United have certain aircraft for the ultra-long haul services such as NYC - Tokyo and O'Hare - Tokyo, based on the actual combinations of airframe and engines. Apparently the performance of one 747-400 is not identical to any another! In normal operation it makes no difference and of course take-off weight and speed calculations etc are not changed to bring into the account the performance of the actual airframe, but there are minute differences in fuel burn from aircraft to aircraft and only the best performers are the ones assigned to the ultra-long haul flights! Strange but apparently true!

The longest flight I've ever been on was Delta La Guardia to Atlanta. The shortest is Athens to Sydney on Olympic (I swallowed a lump of hash before we took off). Hahaha.
