ATA L1011 At IND Today

Mon Nov 28, 2005 4:36 am

Coming into Concourse C at IND today I was surprised to see an ATA L1011 at one of the gates. I suspected it was a troop charter, but I didn't see any military personnel in the concourse. The sign said "AMB Delayed, ####" (I don't remember the numbers). If it was a military charter, would they board the aircraft from the terminal? I always thought they bussed the troops onto the aircraft by the hangars.

Anyone have any info about this flight?

I was quite angry, as this is the first trip in which I forgot my camera...all my pictures of L1011s are so hard to make out because ATA keeps them tucked away by the hangars. I'll probably never have another chance to see a Tristar at the gate  Sad

Could it have been for the travel club perhaps? Yeah I have nightmares about having the perfect photo op but not having my camera with me  Smile

AMB = Ambassadair

I subsidiary of ATA that operates private club charters to vacation destinations. The club and virtually all of its members are based in IND.

Ah, that makes sense...stupid of me to not think of that. Guess I totally forgot they still use the Tristars on charters (besides for the military) these days. Thanks for the help. Any idea where it was headed? Probably some place warmer than Indy.

ATA L-1011s are fairly common at IND. I had a class at Purdue's Indy Airport Campus last spring and saw 2 or 3 of em parked every time I drove down there. Old colors, Palm Tree, Hawaii, all sorts of ATA Tristars at IND.

Yeah, I see them all the time at the hangar...just never at the concourse. Kind of a sidenote, but will ATA continue to operate Ambassadair flights out of IND after they pull out of scheduled operations there? If so, will they keep their own gate or use a Southwest gate?

Yeah, maybe -- that's a military flight, and Kileen got a bunch today to take folks a long way from home (a NW DC10, a UA 747-400, and an AA 777). But as to warm places other than the Desert, there was also a turn on an L1011 from IND through Bonaire (Netherlands Antilles) and St. Kitts (mmm...Nevis) and back to Indy.
