Oasis Hong Kong Airlines To Fly To London Gatwick

Mon Nov 28, 2005 9:10 am

According to their website http://www.oasis-air.com/en/index.asp it looks like Hong Kong's new long-haul budget carrier is planning to launch flights to London Gatwick in June 2006 - For less than HK$1,000!

Other destinations will be Berlin, Cologne and Milan in Europe, and San Jose and Chicago in the US.

They are also looking at tying up with local budget carriers (Easyjet at Gatwick and Germanwings at Cologne) for feed.

Any thoughts? Do you think long-haul budget airlines will work?

Well, Short Haul budget airlines work and i don't see why Long-Haul ops won't.

It looks as though they are a good airline from the website and that interviews etc.

Thanks

It was only time till something like this started. Too bad it isn't in Japan. Would love to have it.

The question is how will CX respond. If they plan to serve Chicago, will CX start it as well? Been waiting for that one. I wonder if CX will also start trying to do more direct flights.

I do hope all works for them and they are employing people now.

As for Chicago.... CX just take too bloody long to open new routes.

SJC will be interesting...as they will be competing against UA/CX on the HKG-SFO route......that being said, it will be interesting to see what kind of plane they bring into SJC if they decide to do it...

Beware of those low fares, some are just introductory offers, after 6 months to a year, most of them raised fares to more realistic levels, creeping closer to price levels of legacy carriers.

According to the Oasis Hong Kong Airlines' website, they have applied to fly between HKG and OAK. I didn't see any mention of SJC. Also, it looks like they will be leasing a pair of 747-400's to start.

It will be interesting to see what comes of this.

I really doubt that, without any feeder services or onward connections from HKG, this airline will secure enough traffic to make its' services viable.

OAK..wow...would be cool to see a 744 roll down the runway there...!

I think FX's MD-11 or FX's A300's are the largest planes there....certainly nothing the size of an B777/B747/A340........

Perhaps I shouldn't be but it surprises me that they didn't apply for LAX or SEA. I guess LAX has too much competition. But SEA doesn't have any service to HKG.

WOW, another longhaul carrier coming to Berlin! A few years ago, Berlin seemed doomed to never have intercontinental service, and now the pace of new connections gets faster and faster.

I highly doubt Germanwings since they are approx. 50 % Lufthansa, but contacting EasyJet is a good idea. However, they must not forget to give Air Berlin and DBA a phonecall, too.

Will they be offering a similar number of technical delays that Phuket Air offered, the last Far Eastern LCC serving LGW?

Much rather Orient Thai offered a Tristar flight to Bangkok from LGW. Give us brits a good chance to fly the L1011 again.

Don't think so, well hope not! Oasis are to operate the 744 not the 742's and 743's that Phuket Air flew to LGW!

I didn't either, I think they choose OAK not SJC!

I hope they decide to start flights to Australia soon after, they could provide a cheap option on the Kangaroo route!

It really sounds great. I'm looking forward to see the final LGW fares.

Is it mentioned anywhere when the Berlin service will commence? And will they operate the LGW route daily from day one?
Last flight: SAW-CPH on H9 on 02/11/09 - Next Flights: 23/12/09 CPH-AAL on QI, 30/12/09 CPH-LHR on SK, 19/01/10 CPH-CDG-

From the article, it seems that they are going for daily LGW first, followed by OAK, but I don't see how they get their average of "only 1 aircraft to operate daily services on any one route" since the flight time is about 12-13 hours to LGW, and some turnover time. Perhaps they are triangulating with another city? Hong Kong-Berlin-London-Hong Kong?

But I have to say the Oakland flight sounds very interesting...

About Oasis, I really don't think if the model will work. Fares to Europe is not really that high in economy class now especially with Gulf Air and Emirates and a number of other airlines, who offer full service (despite with a few stops) and very affordable fares.

I really want to see what kind of service is offered! I sort of hope that there will be a "nice" premium economy cabin of some sort, but not counting on it though.

We will see if it will lift off from the ground.

Teaming up with Germanwings or Easyjet in Berlin, will mean that they are gonna use SXF. Interesting to see a 747 there. And very promising for the Oasis fares, as the SXF taxes are in the low end...

Well, we all know that gate 1 can handle a 747. Martinair and People Express used Gate 1 at OAK regularly in the past.

How will they be able to make any profit with such fares? Their average fares will be somewhat higher if they want to make a profit, I think. What occupancy percentage do they have in mind to start with? Must be rather high!

I doubt whether they will manage to team up with some European domestic LCC's, because transfer traffic apparently isn't part of the standard LCC business plan. Too complicated and thus expensive. As fair as I know, the only LCC to have transfer traffic is Air Berlin, maybe they will be interested in teaming up with Oasis Hong Kong Airlines..

But of course I hope they will succeed! Would be nice to fly to HKG for only £75!

I suppose that we have to add taxes to the fares.

I have just booked a CPH-CDG-LAX with AF at £105 excl. taxes, so I guess that it is possible to operate at that level. If £75 is just a deeply discounted fare for a limited number of seats however, it will be no revolution compared to the conventional operators.

Well, it does sound like they're gunning for, mostly, O&D traffic to HKG. I think there is a good bit of latent demand. I mean, I know plenty of people personally who've never been to HKG and would die to go if fares are only, say, $300-400 a head. It'll be really interesting to see how they do. It's about time we have some real competition in HKG and it can be really good for tourist traffic.

Why aren't they flying to YVR? I would have thought that YVR would have provided them with a good market, not to mention the recent new air agreement between Canada and China which relaxes a lot of the restrictions which previously prevented other carriers from operating between Canada and China.

What is the source for this? It certainly defies the simplicity inherent in LCC operations and bookings. It also conflicts with the following statement from the Oasis web site:

'Oasis' route network will consist of point-to-point service, which means never flying a connection.'

How many seats r they putting on their 744's? One class or 2?

You can jam 620 onto a 743 (accoridng to Boeing website), so presume same with a 744?

Wish they were available for charter !!!

Yeah...no YVR in the plans is surprising too. There are many HK expatriots living in the Vancouver area. Perhaps there's too much capacity between CX and AC.

I think the idea of the tie-up is to have other LCCs that fly regional routes feed into their long international routes. I mean, you can't just rely on O&D traffic when you fly 744s.

I think with CX's twice a day and AC's flight, there's plenty of capacity and I suspect CX and AC will try to protect their turf on this profitable route.

I'm sure they can get fairly reasonable lease rates on the 747-400's considering that airlines are going for the newer, more fuel efficient, higher range 777's.

Come on guys, we all deep down know that this wont work. LCC carriers are profitable as they abuse their aircraft. Twenty minute turns, short flight times, cheap airports and economies of scale.

None of these benefits will occur with Oasis. Just do the maths. The % saving from cutting 10 minutes from your turn, or flying to FRA (east) on a 14 hour flight. The CASM of the 744 just doesnt enable this kind of market to be exploited. CX can also capacity dump Y fares, and the via carriers (EK, etc) can also cause havoc with yield projections.

The only people who make money from it are the French (Corsair a charter carrier) and the Canadians (Zoom and Air Transat, who operate leisure routes with low frequencies and smaller aircraft on shorter flights).

Oasis will not get the benefits Ryanair achieves. Oasis should stick to A320/738 flying within three hours of HKG.

Best western what have u been smoking?

Of course it will work if they keep it simple & keep overheads down. They would dhave got great rates on old UA 744's.

If their leases are very low in cost, then they don't have to work them hard.

Conversely, legacy carriers with their very high overheads & leasing costs have to work their aircraft hard, but in many cases can't do fast turns, even though they'd like too !!!

Absolutely. Not to forget the per passenger weight on shorthaul is much lower as people dont carry as much baggage over short distances as those longhaul passengers. Unlike Ryanair you cant let people carry as much on board or easyjet which doesnt have a weight limit.

I suspect to make money they will
  • allow as little as 10kg for checked baggage and charge a fortune for additional weight
  • provide no free meal or drinks at all and since it's longhaul everyone will be forced to buy from them onboard
  • push hard on duty free sales
  • decorate their aircraft with advertisements inside and outside
  • charge for IFE
  • charge for toilets
  • cramp as many seats as they can onboard up to certificated limit
  • as few FAs as allowed by the law

    More ideas to help them?

Their major competition will come from VS. (CX lost the plot a long time ago & are one of those llegacy carriers destined to die a slow death).

No I havent. Apart from the toilet charge and baggage limit everything else is being done by ryan and easy. I dont see the majors loosing out a lot. Like ryan and easy this is an untapped market segment. People who wouldnt normally travel. That's like one class below economy.

And nobody lost it when VS came online to Hong Kong. There was an initial price war but VS pretty quickly raised fare to a level similar to the others. When QF came online the same happened and they will quote similar fares on all 4 carriers if you go buy tickets now.

VS lost it when they tagged Sydney onto VS200/201.

The market is big enough and is growing. Maybe yield will drop a bit but no one is going to die.

So anything extreme/silly/ridiculous they can do to cut cost?

Stop this concept right now. Its doomed to failure. Y fares are subsidised by F and C passengers.... IN order to stimulate the market, they are really going to have to slash their yields. (we aint talking about a £50 saving)...

Stop this concept right now. Its doomed to failure

Exactly. Therefore they need to do something ridiculous like asking passengers to help flap the wings to save fuel...

I guess you mean MODERN widebody aircraft because 742/3s and L1011s as well as DC-10s are available in big numbers.

    Exactly.....

Nothing like a warm L1011 eh???? (veteran PPRuners will see the irony in this comment)
You are 100 times more likely to catch a cold on a flight than an average person!

Does anyone have an artist impression or drawing on how their livery will look like? Looking at their website it will be a very nice one! Big grin

Thanks for all your posts and comments!

On their website under latest news, you can actually read a scanned pdf copy of the approval of the licences to fly to the cities mentioned above (you'll need to give your email address though)

The licenses are for 747-400 aircraft for:

    1) HKG-LGW and vice versa
    2) HKG-CGN-SXF-MXP and vice versa
    3) HKG-OAK-"Chicago" ORD ? and vice versa

Does anyone know why some cities are grouped together? Does it mean they will be operated all as one route for each application?

So, Oasis is actually going to fly to OAK and then continue on to ORD?

CX lost the plot a long time ago & are one of those llegacy carriers destined to die a slow death

Eh? Airline of the year (Skytrax), and the world's 9th most profitable (The Economist 12th Nov 2005). How on earth do you suppose CX is on its way out?

I suspect to make money they will

    # charge for toilets

The first airline to charge for toilets will abandon the charge the first time someone decides/is forced to relieve themselves in the aisle/seat/galley (saving a penny to spend a penny  Wink).
