UA LAX-BOS 1992

Back in April 1992 me and my family went over to the US on vacation. We flew BA 757 CPH-LHR, then BA 744 LHR-LAX. We stayed in San Diego for a couple of weeks (until the Rodney King riots in L.A settled down). Then we flew UA LAX-BOS to visit my brother who lived there. Now, my question is... Does anyone know what kind of equipment UA used on the LAX-BOS route at the time? I can't remember what it was. My dad says it was a widebody (probably 767), but I have a slight memory of a narrowbody. Could UA have used a 757? This was in the beginning of May 1992 (like 4-6th) and we took off from LAX in the afternoon and arrived to BOS pretty late in the night.

It was probably a 757 or a 767-200/300. It could have been a DC-10 I suppose. The DC-8's were gone by then and I think that leg would be a bit long for a 727. If it was a widebody, more than likely it was a 767-200 as the 300's had the lion share of the international back then. I hope that helps...

A 757 or a 767 would be your best bet on the route, as both United and American operated some mix of the two for years. Post 9/11, it has been almost exclusively 757s for UA (also, only 2 flights a day    ) while AA has gone all the way down to all 738 service, though now has a mix of 738s and 757s

True, although I'm not sure if 757's were utilized on transcon flights, then. Hmmmm....

Yes they were. United has used them on transcons since their introduction of the type in 1989

Thanks alot, guys! However, I was actually hoping to rule out the 767 to prove my dad wrong. Big grin

I'm certain it was a twin, so the DC10, 727 and DC8 are all ruled out.
Ah well, when hearing this from the experts on the subject (you guys), I'm pretty sure now that it was a 767. My slight narrowbody memory is probably from the BA 757 LHR-CPH connection. It was such a long time ago...

I'm sorry to say my oldest OAG is from 1995 but at that time United seems to have been operating four 757s and one A320 a day. The 320 was the redeye flight.

i have the May 1992 OAG

United had 2 nonstops LAX-BOS, both 757's

UA 174 left LAX 0800 arrived BOS 1627
UA 180 left LAX 1255 arrived BOS 2123

looks like you were on UA 180 that day!

American had 2 nonstop DC-10's
Northwest had 1 nonstop 757
