Air New Zealand has doubled the number of flights from Auckland to San Francisco, from three to six times a week.

No surprise. If anyone is connecting anywhere in the US beyond SFO/LAX, NZ passengers can now avoid the dump that is LAX.

I think it was always planned that when the B777 took over on the AKL-SFO route that the frequency would increase.

SFO was originally planned to go daily when the B772s arrived, now where will the B744 go?

The 6 weekly was the plan when the 777 came online. It's just now officially starting up. What will be great for SFO is if NZ1/2 gets routed via SFO.

Well I personally can't wait to come come home and see NZ followed by QF arriving. To bad they will most likely park on seperate sided of the airport.

NZ1, let us know if you hear anything!

Most likely additional flights to LHR!

I think SFO could go daily by the end of next year!  Smile

it started yesterday-29.11.2005- as I was the only one there to watch it arrive...the weather wasn't too good (rainy/little bit foggy), but it was well worth the trip as the BEAUTIFUL bird arrived on 19L..... biggrin

I wish NZ all the luck in the world - I'm sure they will do very well. Too bad that I can't come down to AKL or CHC for the time being. I miss Auckland and New Zealand and the wonderful people that are Kiwis.

What is the O&D traffic on the LAX-AKL route? What's the frequency of NZ's CHC-LAX? Thx.

A major contributing factor to the success of Air New Zealand in SFO has been the brilliant local advertising work done on behalf of ANZ by BBDO West. They did an impressive poster series at the airports, as well as some brilliant magazine advertising. I was impressed.

Maybe NZ will open another city as an extension to their SFO service...ORD, DEN, JFK, or YYZ perhaps?

I wonder did NZ's advertising campaign in co-operation with the producers of the Lord of the Rings movies was the reason why NZ has done well on their AKL-SFO and AKL-LAX flights.  Smile

There's still the option of taking the 772LR and if this happens, a daily MEL-AKL-JFK or SYD-AKL-JFK could be on the cards. I don't think they'd leg anything out from SFO as they've now got smaller craft that can fly farther and there is cabotage restrictions on this activity.

The answer is yes. This currently being worked on. The problem is that the 744 has too much capacity, while with the 777, we don't have enough capacity. I can however assure you that we WILL be flying AKL-YVR with our OWN metal in the not too distant future.

AC are also apperantly planning on it with B772LRs.

Also in the interview with Mr Fyfe (its on the four pages that has the arrival of ZK-OKA into AKL), he gave the impression that no new orders will come for a while now, Mr Fyfe also confirmed that NZ will order the B773ER to replace the B744s, but is also leaving the door open for a possible B744ADV order

Since Air Canada has stated that they are interested in operating the route as well (likely with the 777LR), I'm wondering if it would be possible for this to be a daily route (codeshared) with ANZ operating it 3X and AC 4X weekly? It seems like a good idea to me.

PS Thanks NZ1 for the news that ANZ will be operating to YVR, I can't wait for the opportunity to fly ANZ (especially, considering that fact that I like the colour of their lay flat seating a lot better than that horrid blue camouflage pattern that AC is planning on using).

I find the fact that demand exceeds the capacity of the -200ER quite surprising. Why not use the -200ER and try for a better yield. Does this projected capacity assume that passengers in Eastern Canada will elect to go via YVR. Speaking for myself don't count me in . I will stick with SFO until an ORD or JFK service is started.
If it is go, NZ might as well quit the AKL-HNL route unless they do it as an extension of AKL-RAR or AKL-PPT and use an A320.

My guess would be IF YVR goes ahead HNL would be dropped. It isn't a high-yielding route and with YVR on-line, HNL would be fairly unnecessary (a large proportion of pax are continuing on to Canada).

I hope I'm wrong though!

Well I can't argue with the figures and projections. I have suggested exactly what you have said, but Network planning and others don't agree, at the moment.

I would say it is highly likely that HNL would be dropped, and if the public outcry was big enough, you may see it as an extension of AKL-RAR or AKL-NAN

But I thought the whole point of having the 5 767's remaining in the fleet was for capacity upgrade. Where would the 767 fly to?, YVR is too far...... routes like HKG and SIN need to keep the 777 as there is stiff competition. What are the yields like for the HNL route. Maybe FJ would start up the route again or AC might fly it as part of the YVR service to AKL *if it goes ahead* or even QF might look at flying to HNL from AKL! I just hope that AKL/Air NZ do not loose another long-haul route.......

We have other routes under consideration for capacity increases, as well as new destinations in mind that the 763 could fly to. Even though we are keeping 5, it is only for the medium term. They will all be phased out as extra 787 and 777 capacity arrives over the next 5 to 10 years.

I hope NZ can at least keep some daly flights to HNL; nonstop or via NAN or RAR doesn't matter.

NZ's network in the pacific makes a star alliance around-the-world uncomparable to any other rtw ticket.

I agree, it would definately be a dissapointment to see HNL go after other routes have been dropped over the past 10 years like NAN-HNL, RAR-HNL, RAR-LAX*direct*, Tonga-HNL and HNL-LAX e.t.c

Would these new routes be long-haul to the pacific by any chance?. Also in this months Australian aviation Rob Fyfe said that NZ was looking at getting portable dvd players in economy for the 767 *is this going to happen* and when are the interior upgrades on the 767's going to be completed?

The DVD players are looking like they are gonna happen yes. The 767 upgrades are not the same as what is happening to the 744 fleet. The 767 will be getting new carpet, curtains, seat covers etc. The interior linings and overhead bins will also be repainted, but thats about it. Same seats, same galleys. I don't have a definite date on when this will be done yet sorry.

Not exactly the right thread to ask the question, but here goes; What are the odds that some of the last of the eight -200ER's will be changed to -200LR's? A constraint may be the contractural arrangement with Rolls and putting into place a satisfactory one with G.E. The latter might be simpler if -300ER's and 747-8
types are to be introduced into the fleet.
