Why has Philippine Airlines recently leased this 747-200? Are they doing this for the busy summer period? Also, couldn't it use on of their A330's or A340's instead of having to resort to a used 747-200 that cost a lot to fuel up?

I have been on a few Philippines 747-200s, and the experience was never less than terrifying. The service and food was always good the the aircraft were always filthy (esp on the outside) and I was always alarmed by one aspect of the way the aircraft was handled in the air. Never a dull moment, as they say.

BTW, are you sure this is a leased aircraft? Philippines always flew GE powered -200s (although had a couple of JT9D powered aircraft, which were the ones I always found myself on) (nearly always, anyway).

There aren't many GE 747s around, I would think this is part of the original PR fleet, and maybe has been returned FROM lease? I would expect that if they leased iron for a season (a) it wouldn't be painted in full livery (b) it would be P&W powered (c) it wouldn't even be a 747 and (d) it wouldn't have a full Philippine reg.

Just a few thoughts. Nice photo BTW.

While checking the PR website, I too was surprised to see the 742 in PR's MNL-SYD route -- in fact I thought it was a typo since they now operate much newer aircraft. I also saw the 742 scheduled for MNL-Cebu flights.

Philippines recently re-registered two of its former US-registered 742´s. These aircraft spent some time in storage after the almost-breakdown of the airline in 1998.

Have a nice day.

Its great news to see Philippines getting their planes back. They are also getting two of their A340-300's back.

The 747-200's are..

RP-C8820, RP-C8830 and RP-C8850

They are ex N207AE, N208AE and N743PR.

N207AE is now RP-C8850, not sure which way round the other two are !!

I've flown PR many times and I've never had a problem, these flight included.

I do think that Philippine Airlines has some N-registration 747-200s in the past, but aren't they all repossessed by their owners already? (Or are they returned??)

The only Philippine Airlines 747-200 at the moment is RP-C8220... and that's just a few days ago...

If we look closely at this picture we can come to the conclusion that at least when the photograph was taken PAL was operating 2 747-200s. There is a Philippine Airlines 747-200 a few gates to the right of this aicraft.

Hello?

Wed May 24, 2000 3:05 am

Did anyone read my post ??, they have three (3) 747-200's.

This photo does show two 747's, it was taken during the first day of the easter holidays. During a three hour period that day nine (9) PR aircraft arrived.
