IB Short Of Big Aircraft

According with a newspaper here in Costa Rica, yesterday 11/29 [still 11/30 here], about 40 upset Iberia's passengers won't allowed for several minutes the rest of the passengers to board the a/c, apparently to an overbook flight between SJO/PTY/MAD. According with the paper, and the declaration of some IB's officers in MAD, they were [or are] short of big a/c due to maintenance at Barajas, which obligated them to leased [they never mention which aircraft was leased] one [maybe more] to "JetTikal" [sorry never heard of them]. Those 40 passenger were not only angry with IB and the overbook flight but about of the security of the leased a/c. This last statement was obviously refused by IB's authorities, because it's involved company's reputation.

Airport Police must intervened and allowed the checked passengers to flew to PTY and then to MAD.

IB Short Of Big Aircraft

Iberia currently has 18 A340-300's, 11 A340-600s, and 2 B747-400s.

Two A340-300's go into the shop a month to be installed with the new Business Class product.

The 2 B747-400's fly to Tenerife and Havana and ocasionally to SJU/SDQ when needed. The A340-300's and A340-600's fly to South America, North America, and Africa.

With two A340-300's going into the shop a month it means that Iberia is short two aircraft in their standerd long-haul fleet. In the last couple months Iberia was operating their two Air Atlanta B747-300's Iberia was leasing Air Pullmantur B747s and Iberworld A330s to take over the B747-300's flights when ever one went tech.

I would think that the leased aircraft might be a Air Pullmantur B747.

The SJO/PTY/MAD route is flown by the A340-300's which could explain the reason for the leased aircraft. Sometimes Iberia sends the A340-600 on the A340-300 routes if the passenger load is higher but with the two B747-300's now gone I am sure that the 11 A340-600's are busy.

Does not suprise me in the slightest that Iberia have not got it together. Short of aircraft and upsetting passengers. The airline is shocking, god knows why they still are in OneWorld.

I live in Spain, Madrid, and I cannot stand Iberia. The whole airline is a complete shambles. According to the National Newspaper "El Pais" Iberia published huge profits for their last quarters, and we all know why they are making so much money. They destroyed any element of Inflight Service thorught unbelieveably arrogant F/A´s, introduced an inflight meal service which is overpriced and offers practially inedible food and continue to charge even more than BA and rivals for flights to and from Spain. Its a disgrace. I would rather take the bus than fly with Iberia. They have completely lost the plot.

Fully agree with 'Paul', while slightly going off topic, Iberia seem uninterested in services. Here on Lanzarote they have finished the early morning service and now only operate here once daily from/to MAD (mainline service) Air Europa/Spanair are really mopping up here now. The papers have made comment about Iberia treating Lanzarote as second class!
Yet they seem to be having new planes!

From what I understand the SJO-PTY-MAD route has been upgraded to a A346 permanently, at least the timetable reflects that. I think that IB should start replacing some A343's with A346's for the latin american routes which have BOOMED in the last few years.

Where's Alfonso when you need him?

I believe that one of the 747-400s has already been returned to Air Atlanta, and there is only one remaining. Which one, I am not sure, but one of them went back.

Both of them are with us again. One flying to TFN and the other one arrived today from SIN and will start going to SDQ tomorrow.

IB charge more than BA? Sorry Paul you have no idea and not a clue about what your talking about. First BA and IB cooperate on most of these routes, with the MAD-LHR and BCN-LHR actually sharing the profits. (Not too sure on the BCN one).

IB's high profit for 2004 is mainly the result of their selling a part of their stake in AMADEUS. ACE being treated as second class? Again what a load of CRAP. IB treats all their destinations the same and will fly to where they think they will earn the most amount of income per flight.

IB might be as bad as you say, even the worst in the world, but hey as long as they make a profit and remain open I prefer that to working for the greatest airline in the world if they make a loss and end up closing shop.  biggrin 

The reasons for the problems IB has had in our central American operations last week is something I'm not willing to say here  tapedshut  but again most have no IDEA.

IB have made many moves over the last couple of years in order to keep the airline going and I say they must be doing something right as they are still going strong while many have disappeared and the future although it looks like it will be tough I'm willing to bet we'll still be around while others wont.
These are my principles but if you don't like them I have others

I fly them regularly and find them no more shocking than any other OneWorld member.

That explains why I only saw TF-AMA at MAD when I flew out on November 25th.

I was not aware of the change to the A340-600 on the SJO/PTY/MAD route shy

Would you like to tell me why I paid almost sixty punds more for my Iberia flight LHR- MAD than I did for my British Airways flight? Are you telling me that there is no difference between paying 150 punds for a BA ticket and paying 210 punds for an Iberian ticket (based on basically the same fare conditions). Yes ok, maybe ticket prices have NOW been fixed between the two airlines but when I bought my tickets this was not the case. And we are not talking about four years ago!

I mean, it is completely insane for an airline to think they justify charging the same ticket prices as a codeshare airline charges for the same route when the disparity between products is monumental!

What's worse is that British Airways really piss off a great deal of customers by putting them on Iberia flights because of the codeshare agreement, especially when they have paid a higher Economy ticket price and get stuck with the crap that Iberia call 'Inflight service'.

The key differences; BA

1. Online check- in to reduce waiting time at airports.
2. Courteous, friendly staff on the ground who actually do care about you.
3. Helpful staff at the gates.
4. Free food onboard.
5. Free onboard soft drinks.
6. Free alcohol onboard.
7. Smiling, courteous F/A's, unlike the arrogant bunch of pijas that work on the Iberia aircraft.

The quality of these two European products is so big it cannot be described.
I certainly would not want to work for an airline that gets ridiculed and slandered for its atrocious European service at nearly every opportunity.

If an airline that is not low cost thinks it can justify charging a passenger for a cup, not a bottle, a cup of water when he has paid over two hundred pounds for his return ticket to Malaga, they seriously need to reconsider a competitive strategy that is not solely based on making a profit, but pleasing customers.

I hadn't realized that the 743's were back with Air Atlanta and no longer being used on the MIA flight, I enjoyed seeing those planes flying over the beach on their way to MAD, and TF ATJ gave me my 2nd ever 747 flight a couple years ago... crazy, when I flew the 743 into MAD that day, I didn't see a single 346, yet there were 4 other IB 747s on the ground: the other full liveried 743, a white 743 with small iberia titles, a 742 with engines removed by itself visible from the runway we landed on, and EC DIB, the 742, at the gate next to ours... none of which are still with Iberia... kinda sad.

IB has Auto-check-in machines in most Spanish airports plus Frankfurt and Orly and has just launched (may 2005) autocheckin online for ALL spanish airports where an IB-coded flight flies into and most European countries
