I worked with BW
from '88 until '93. The stories I could tell you... I remember BW609 was an overnight YYZ
service arriving at BGI
at around 4:30 AM
- would often overfly BGI
and go direct to POS
supposedly due to maintenance. We would joke that the Trini (Trinidadian) crew just wanted to get home sooner! Of course, the passengers in BGI
traveling to POS
to connect to GEO, TAB
, and AUA
weren't too happy... neither were the BGI
2 and 3 day delays were not "rare occurrences" - I can remember more than 5. It was tough to work with BW
becuase as West Indians, we all had some pride in working for BeeWee - being around since 1940 means that most of us grew up with some BeeWee experiences either with family visiting from abroad or traveling with BeeWee.
I used to defend BW
a bit - the service could be very good (at least before IFE and flat first class seating came around) and I've been on many on-time fights with excellent service. But, the bad ones are talked about more often!
My humble opinion? It's time for BeeWee to "retire". It's a financial drain on the government and "brand loyalty" isn't as great as before... People fly the cheapest and don't base airline choice on whether or not it's patriotic much. I've tried many times to fly home (to BGI
) on BW
but always find better fares on US, AA
, and now DL
. LIAT could pick up the airbridge service between TAB
and otherwise other carriers could pick up the slack in N. America and Europe services. I'd like to see LI
become stronger and consider regional jets for longer routes and even expand out to KIN
(like back in the 70s).
just can't compete with the big "foreign" carriers by offering poor service (more often than not according to reports), unreliable operations, no stong alliances, and NO MONEY. POS
really can't become a hub for S. American routes as is discussed because Copa seems to have that wrapped up. Also, they're good at what they do!*
*backing from CO
is best remembered as a part of West Indian history that served our nations well. I don't think they can carry out that role any longer...
