Color Of Airplane

Fri Dec 02, 2005 1:04 pm

I had read something about aircraft colors. I remember it saying the color white is the best color for an airline to have, as it saves on fuel and keeps the plane cool in the summer. Does anyone have any info on this?

Thanks

Depends what you mean by "best".

Many airlines that use white as a base color, have bland, boring and ineffective liveries. CO for example. Some though can make white look quite nice on their a/c. Take VS, UA and JAL as an example

It does both. Correct. This may be why we are seeing so many euro-white liveries lately (mainly for the cost saving factor).

Welcome to Airliners.net and happy posting!

Look at US Airways, changing to white, due to the heat in Las Vegas and Phoenix, although it will also benefit some of the FL routes as well. The HP exec were worried the dark colors of US would cause the plane's cabins to get to hot while sitting on the ground in both Las Vegas and Phoenix. I supposed that's why white is the most popular color for autos in Arizona. Also the dark colors are difficult for controllers to see the planes on the ground in the evening hours. More than once was an UA jet invisible while on the ground.

IMO CO, UA, DL, and VS are very good examples of eurowhite done right. AF on the other hand is very generic and lacking in any culture.
And all at once the crowd begins to sing: Sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing are the same
