Southwest 737 @ ATL

Sat Dec 03, 2005 4:07 am

I just saw a Southwest 737 depart ATL from 26L. Anyone else see it, or know the specifics on this flight?

On a similar note, where is the best place on the web to research these unscheduled flights?

It was very cool to see the unique and rare (to ATL) Southwest paint job.

Thanks in advance

I will virtually guarantee that this charter has something to do with this weekends SEC championship game here in ATL. The LSU tigers are facing the Georgia Bulldogs.

Back in the early 1980s, I jumpseated on a BTR-MIA charter we were running to carry LSU Tiger fans to the Orange Bowl.

As we got closer to MIA, and Eastern flight heard ATC call us, and asked "Southwest? What are you guys going down here?"

The captain's response was short, but sweet: "Proving run"  Wink

Yeah, 10 or 15 years later...

Makes you wonder what the AirTran and Delta pilot's first thoughts were...

The last time I saw a WN 737 @ ATL was back in January 2000 after the Super Bowl. They were taking some NFL bigwigs back up the NYC.

This charter is definitely related to the SEC Championship Game, but I would guess it was either a fan charter, band/cheerleaders, or school officials, as there was a DL charter flight from BTR that landed about an hour later that was more than likely the team charter (a/c was a 763). Both UGA and LSU are staying at hotels by ATL (LSU @ the Renaissance, UGA @ the Hilton).

I like using FlyteComm, but there are several others that are pretty decent as well.

I don't know about Airtran but the DL pilots were probably thinking "are they hiring".

What about the looks on some of the faces when Boeing was doing flight certification, parked one of the brand new NG's in full WN colors at HNL for a couple of days.

Lol, interesting. With the delays ATL I don't see WN in ATL with scheduled service anytime soon, however ATL and MSP seem to be the biggest gaps in there route map (MEM, CVG, and NYC too if you don't count ISP).
