Google Earth: Inbound Flights To LAX

Sat Dec 03, 2005 10:28 am

To those of you with Google Earth installed, this is a pretty cool link:

http://www.fboweb.com/antest/ge/intro.aspx

It will open Google Earth and show all inbound flights to LAX. You can zoom in around the Los Angeles area and tilt the map and see the flights being vectored around. I wonder how long it'll be until they have more airports and flights!

Do you have to have Google Earth Plus for this? All I keep getting is an HTML file-looking thing (actually .aspx, whatever that extension is) being opened in notepad. So I reprogrammed my file options to use googleearth.exe to open the .aspx file it gives, and while clicking on it does open Google Earth, nothing special seems to happen.

Sounds cool, though.

Try getting an update for Google Earth. Mine automatically prompted me to update and it worked fine when I tried it after the installation.

After you have Goole Earth click on the above link.

Does this actually show the plane or does it just show where they are?

I have the same problem too, but I had a look through the file, and if you save the file below to a directory on your hard drive, and open it with Google Earth, it does work. However I think because the ASP is not enabled the traffic does not appear to update. Maybe someone can shed some more light on it!

For those of you where it does not work, I tricked it as I could not make it work either.

In the aspx file, when opened in notepad, I found the below address:

http://www.fboweb.com/antest/ge/geLAX.kml

I opened Google Earth, chose "tools" and then "web", it opened a web page below my main screen, I pasted the above address there and it worked!!!

Edit: even better, I saved the aspx fileon my desktop, renamed the extension in kml, opened it through GE, and now it refreshes.

There are a fair few craft to be spotted departed and arriving at LHR.

It leaves me to think, if they allow us this capability to see from a satellite , what can they see that we are not allowed to view?
