Technical Question [B737-300]

Tue May 23, 2000 1:43 pm

Hello, I have noticed this on many of my SW 737-300 flights. Under the wing where the flaps are, when the flaps are down, there is always this cup shapped item under one of the slat [I think thats it] in the middle of the wing. Why is this there? is it to slow the plane down even more?

Thanks,

Please be more specific. A lot of people might have the knowledge for your answer (like me), but don't know what you are talking about. Also how can you know about this thing. You tell it's under the wing. I suppose you see it when you're on board. On the ground when you are outside the aircraft, flaps are usually up.

Are you refering to the landlights that are mounted under the wings? Those are the only cup-shaped items under 737 wings that I know.

I believe that you are referring to the landing lights that retract up into the wing fairings/flap tracks when flaps are retracted and come out when extended. I flew a Continental 737 and noticed the same thing.
