Cathay As Dirty As AF

Sun Dec 04, 2005 2:26 pm

I was at MEL the other day, and saw
the Airbus A330-300, B-HLP belonging to CX.

And i tell you want, it was absolutely flithy.
Not just a bit, but every bit as bad as Air France
gets including water marks running away from the windows,
not a good look for such a highly respected airline.

What's up at cathay? They never used to be like this?
Also, I thought it was funny the rego was B-HLP.... HLP, or
HELP is exactly what his airbus needed.

I agree, B-HLS is another 3-class A330-300 in the CX fleet that's absolutely filthy. I think it's something to do with the fact that they can do a round-trip from HKG to SYD/MEL within 24 hours including turnarounds which are an hour or two long at our end. Maybe somebody can shed some light on this but there is a certain group of CX A330-300s (the heavier 10,500km range version) that just get the crap worked out of them between aus/hk - return trip 7 days a week, 18hours+ utilisation everyday. They use 3 alone for the 3x daily for SYD-HKG, it's really cool when one of them is out for maintenance though cos that means we get an A340-300 instead or when we're really lucky, a pax 744 during the peak season.

So unless the aircraft are in for heavy maintenance, there's no time to clean them. The air surrounding HK is pretty dirty too with the high humidity and the crap that gets blown south from China so I guess there's not much point to wash them either, just a waste of $$ that needs to go to paying their A346 fuel bills to JFK :P.

The only time I've ever seen a clean CX A330 in SYD was when they introduced B-LAC into the fleet - check the pics  Smile And then it got dirty and stayed that way....  Smile

Anybody got more info on how the CX fleet gets rotated through Oz and how often they need heavy maintenance at Taeco?

The 343s aren't that bad, but still never look clean. Part of it is that hideous livery though.

Not to mention all the dirt that is locally produced. The lacals are only all too happy to blame it all on their compatriots on the other side of the border forgetting that the are doing a lot themselves and could do much more than they actually do.

I think the Delta 757 takes the cake on dirty planes! I'd be afraid to get on a plane that looked like that on the outside... you know what they say about restuarants that have dirty bathrooms....

Not to be a jerk - but paint dont make a plane fly.

I can see what your saying though. Not the greatest image to see if its your first flight or something.

This may sound totally ignorant, but I have to ask: "Doesn't all this dirt somehow, even in the slightest way, have an impact on the plane's ultimate performance?"

This is the worst Aer Lingus A330 I have ever seen. I don't think it would bother many passengers.

Do you mean as dirty as that? These ones may not be immaculate, but they do not look bad i would say.

Are you kidding me? A thread about dirty planes. They fly, they land, they fly some more, they get dirty.

I think you should contact AF or CX and see if they'd create a position of Aircraft Washer, just for you.

Who knows, it might develop into some highly lucrative new position for airlines and you'd be the rich!  Smile

Regarding the DL 757:

That's not just a dirt problem. What took the paint off like that?

you know what they say about restaurants that have dirty bathrooms....

I go to restaurants to eat nice food, not to go and check out the loo.I have flown on many very dirty airliners, and am still alive to tell the story. If the in flight is ok. Who cares about the dirty A/C.
Can some one tell me how long dose it take to wash an aircraft? What about re lubricating flaps, U/carriage,and any other parts, as I would assume that the cleaning liquid used to wash A/C, would not be as nice and gentle as say Maguire's car shampoo.

AA's livery is decieving. I fly AA a lot and the planes look clean from far away, when you walk through the jetbrige you see the plane is dirty, and being the good plane fan I am I always sit behind the wing, and the wings are somtimes china eastern (see reply 8) filthy.

I see LAN Planes a lot and they are very clean usually, except for the usual dirty spots close to the doors and on the wings.

I saw a programme a few years ago that said keeping an aircraft clean can save an airline tons of fuel every year. The dirt distorts the airflow and stuff like that and causes drag.

Most planes are sitting idle on the tarmac for 8 hours every night. Plenty of time to get out the polish and give 'em a good scrub!
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

before Boeing took the 772LR on that HKG-LHR record breaking flight, they had it specially washed and took off 350lb (or maybe it was even kg!) of dirt!!
