Flight Report CX LHR-MNL-LHR

Tue May 23, 2000 6:02 pm

I'm back & I've only got one thing to say about the flight. FANTASTIC!

My biggest fear was not being able to get into the cockpit.

On the flight from Heathrow to Hong Kong I tried my luck but got rejected, as it was supposed to be "a training flight". This knocked me back a bit & I got disheartened so on the flight from HK to Manila on an A340 I decided not to ask, (a big regret). But on the way back from Manila to HK on a 777-200 I just had to ask, & sure enough the f/a came back & asked me if I would follow her. Well, I was just so surprised I just dumped my son on the lap of my wife & just ran!

An amazing aircraft!

To all you who have not been in a cockpit before, the 777 is to planes, what the Rolls Royce is to cars! Kind of fitting that they teamed up huh!
When you see the numbers 777 on the stick & Boeing on the dashboard you kind of get the feeling that you are privileged to be sitting there looking at all that technology in action. Looking at the beauty of it all working together, 'almost' flawlessly to give one amazing ride!

On the way back to London from HK I also managed to see the flight deck of the 744, very nice, not as impressive as the 777 but very well laid out.
I dont know what the record time is for a passenger spending in the flight deck but I'm sure I was close to breaking it. 1 1/2 hours!!!! They just didn't want me to leave, they even said that they would ask me to stay for the landing but someone else beat me to it, none other than the editor of Flight Int magazine!!! Darn!

But it was a memorable flight, Cathay definitely gets a thumbs up from me.

P.S Thanks to 1st Off Stuart & Damian on CX251 for allowing me to see the 744 deck.

On my last trip to London from Hong Kong on CX 251, I managed to spend 3 hours in the flight deck and watched the sunrise over Russia. It was the most beautiful experience...nevertheless, I was travelling on their superb First Class sleep seat. I found the crew to be very helpful and talked about many issues facing the airline industry.

I must admit that Cathay Pacific flight crews are great...very experienced and well read in the airline business.

CX...keep up the great work.

Hi, nice report, thanks!

yes CX is a great airline indeed i have made some 10-14 flights with them and i can only recall positive things.
The longest time i have spent in cockpit (please don't misunderstand me, iam not trying to compete or show off!) was 4:30 hours in a A310-300 actually i flew on the jumpseat due to full flight (i was on subload) it was so great because you catch everything that happens.

Wonderful airline - with a name like mine, you can guess I'm a fan. My best flight was from Osaka to the new CLK thingey, but a great flight - j/s for t/o and landing. What a trip, what an airline.

Mind you, Virgin comes very close. I'd like to try them out on a HK trip sometime!

I enjoyed reading your report. I visited a BA 777 cockpit not long ago. It was an amazing experience.
